The most important gift my father gave to me was his music. But he did not want me to pursue a career in being a musician.

I quit college and I came home. And my father says, "Oh Jesus, what are you gonna do now?"
大学を中退して家に戻ってきた時、お父さんは「やれやれ、お前、これからどうする気だい？」
I said, "Dad, I'm gonna play my music around the world." He says, "Joanie, oh my God. I'll never sleep a wink with you."
私は「お父さん、私世界中に行って自分の演奏を聞いてもらいたい。」お父さんは「ジョアニー、困ったもんだ。お前と付き合っていると、おちおち寝られやしない。」
My heart is happiest when I'm playing the penny whistle.
私は、ペニーホイッスルを吹いているときが、一番幸せな気分になれます。
The community I live in is very much an Irish-American community. You have the Irish butcher and you have the Irish coffee shops, and the Irish pubs, this neighborhood is really Irish.
私の家がある町は、アイルランド系アメリカ人のコミュニティーです。アイルランド系の人達が経営するお店、食肉解体業者さん、コーヒーショップ、パブ、文字通り、アイルランド系の隣近所なんです。
My father was dying to have a child to play Irish music and I came along.
お父さんはアイルランド音楽をやってくれる子供が欲しいと、強く思っていました。そこへ、私が生まれてきたんです。
He learned his music from his great uncles. The music has been passed down and passed down and passed down.
お父さんは、そのまた叔父さん達から音楽を習いました。私達の音楽は、世代から次の世代へと、次々と受け継がれてきているのです。
My father, he started me on fiddle lessons and I took fiddle for a year and a half. I hated it. I hated every minute of it.
お父さんは、私にフィドルのレッスンを受けさせました。1年半ほどやってみましたが、大嫌いでして、1分1秒が嫌なんですよね。
And then we had a piano and I took two weeks lessons on the piano and I didn't like the piano.
次にピアノ、これは2週間ほどやりましたが、やはりピアノも好きになれませんでした。
And then one day I saw the whistle. And as soon as I heard it, oh my God, that was it.
それである日、見かけたのがペニーホイッスルです。その音を耳にしてすぐに、ヨッシャ、これだ、と思いました。
There's whistles everywhere in this house. (laughs) This is my life, organized chaos. (laughs)
この家の中には、あちこちにペニーホイッスルがしまってあります（笑）内の中はこんな感じですよ、散らかっていますが、どこに何があるかは把握している、みたいな（笑）
Once I started playing, I wouldn't stop, and I used to play while we're watching television. So my brothers finally made an agreement that I could only play during commercials. So I would play on commercials, but then I would go and the whistle would be gone.
私は一旦吹き始めると、もう止まりません。家族でテレビを見ている間、私は吹きまくるんです。そこで兄弟達と折り合いをつけて、コマーシャルの間だけにしろということになったんです。それでコマーシャルの間だけ吹いていたのですが、そのうちブレーキが効かなくなって、結局ペニーホイッスルを隠されてしまったんです。
And I'll never forget when we sold the house and we were moving, I found out my brothers and sister were taking the whistles and shoving them down the couch. There was about 13 of them down there. (laughs)
当時住んでいた家を売って、引っ越した時のことは忘れません。気づいたら、兄弟達と姉がですね、私が持っていたペニーホイッスルを全部、ソファーの下にしまい込んでいたんです。13本くらいですかね（笑）
Well, this was given to me by a whistle class and they all signed it. One of my students signed it. I didn't even remember this one. But each one has a story. It's funny.
これは私の授業を受けた子達が、皆で寄せ書きをしてくれています。これはその内の1人ですね。これは、何だったかな、忘れちゃったな。でも、どのペニーホイッスルも、憶えている事があります。私って変かしらね。
In 1983, I went to Ireland and competed over in the Ireland championship along with wonderful friends of mine who happened to be all women and we had a great year.
1983年にアイルランドへ行って、コンクールに参加したんです。その時は最高に気の合った友人達と一緒で、たまたま全員女子だけだったんですけど、本当に最高の年になりました。
I won the whistle, which was what I was going to do and I was the first American to win it.
私はペニーホイッスル部門で優勝しました。これは私個人が狙っていた部門で、アメリカ人としては、私が最初の優勝者です。
When I came home, I received a phone call from my great friend, Dr. Mick Moloney, and he thought we should get a concert series together in celebration. Mick is a professor of ethnomusicology.
帰国すると、電話がかかってきました。友人、といってもとても偉い方なんですが、ミック・モロニー先生と言って、コンクール優勝のお祝いに、コンサートシリーズを構想してくださったんです。ミックが教えているのは、民族音楽です。
He said, “I went to the Philadelphia Irish Musician Society, and over a hundred years,” he said, “You know, how many members were women?”
先生は私に「フィラデルフィアのアイルランド人音楽家協会に訊いてみたんだが、この100年間で、女性会員が何人いたと思う？」て
I said, “I don't know.” He said, “Zero.”
私は「わかりません」というと、先生は「1人もいないってよ。」
Cherish the Ladies began in 1985. And here we are, 36 years later.
「チェリッシュ・ザ・レディース」は1985年に結成されて、今日（2021年）まで36年間続いています。
When we first started playing, people thought we were like a Spice Girls kind of a thing, that we were just these bunch of girls thrown together for a marketing ploy, and then we'd start to play and entertain and they'd go, "Damn, you girls really can play."
結成当初、演奏活動を始めたばかりの頃は、皆さんスパイス・ガールズみたいなもんだろう、て思ったようですね。女の子達が集まって、売れればいいでしょみたいに思われていたようです。なので、私達が実際に演奏を始めて、それで皆さんに楽しんでいただけたところで、「なんだ、君たち、ガチで上手に弾けるんじゃないか」となったんですよ。
I'm a girl from the Bronx who has made my living playing traditional Irish music, recorded 24 albums so far, and has toured all over the world.
私は単に、ブロンクス生まれの1人の女子ですが、アイルランドの伝統音楽を演奏して食べて行けています。おかげさまでアルバムは24枚作らせていただいて、世界中に行って自分の演奏を聞いてもらっています。
Never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever think that was possible.
こんなとんでもない夢、叶うなんて、一度も思ったことはありません。
We started out as just an Irish-American band and now we're considered one of the top Irish Celtic groups in the world.
私達の出発点は、ただのアイルランド系アメリカ人のバンドでした。でも今では、世界でもトップクラスのアイリッシュ＝ケルティック音楽のグループだと、見ていただけています。
Mary's dad and my dad, they were great buddies. Her father was a great accordion player as well and I remember when we would do concerts, they'd all be at the back of the hall, all the dads lined up, and after each tune you'd see them all going like this.

You know, we used to be more worried about what our fathers would think of each album instead of the New York Times. (laughs)

My parents came to watch me play with the Boston Pops up at Tanglewood. I looked down, and I was playing the solo with a hundred piece orchestra, my father was crying.
ボストン・ポップス・オーケストラが、タングルウッドでコンサートを開いた時に、私がソリストとして共演したんです。その時に両親が見に来てくれて、100人のオーケストラをバックに演奏する私を見て、お父さんが泣いているんですよ。
He said, "Jesus, you did it. You did everything you said you were gonna do." He'd be so proud to see me today.
お父さんは「やったな、オイ！お前が宣言したこと、全部やってのけたじゃないか！」て。お父さん、生きていたら今頃、私の姿を見て、誇りに思ってくれただろうな。
Anybody who says they got it from the wind, they're full of it. You got it from all these people who have given their hearts, their souls, passing the music down and giving their time.
「吹く風の中から音楽をもらった」という音楽家がいたなら、その人の中には、音楽がギッシリ詰まっている、ということです。それはつまり、その人が音楽を教わった人達とは、全員、自分の心、自分の魂を、教えた人に差し出した、てことなんです。そうやって、音楽を教え伝えて、そして自分達の過ごした時代をも、教えた人に差し出してきたのです。
It's music from the birds and the bees, and there's something in it that touches people.
私達の音楽は、鳥達やミツバチ達からもらったものです。そしてそこには、人の心を感動させる、そんなものがあるのです。
