Taiwan's National Symphony Orchestra is one of the top orchestras in Asia, and it plays music from all over the world.

台湾の「國家交響楽団」といえば、アジア屈指のオーケストラの1つです。ここでは世界中の音楽作品を採り上げて演奏しています。
I got the chance to speak with orchestra's new music director, Jun Märkl, about his experience as a conductor in Taiwan and beyond.
今回新しく音楽監督に就任なさいました、準・メルクルさんにインタビューする機会をいただき、台湾での指揮者としての活動など、幅広くお話をうかがってまいりました。

I'm here with Jun Märkl, an award-winning German conductor. Mr. Märkl has traveled all around the world with various orchestras, and he is currently serving as music director of the Taiwan Philharmonic. Can you describe what has your experience been like working with them?
エマ・ベナック
準・メルクルさんにお越しいただきました。数々の受賞歴をお持ちの、ドイツ出身の指揮者です。メルクルさんはこれまで、世界各地で数々のオーケストラの指揮をされていて、現在は台湾フィルハーモニックの音楽監督としてご活躍中です。ここまでの感想はいかがですか？

This is a fantastic orchestra, into orchestrating big formation, so it's a great, great big symphony orchestra.
準・メルクル
このオーケストラはとても素晴らしいですよ。編成も大きいですし、本当に、実力があって、スケールの大きなオーケストラです。
They are very friendly, like most Taiwanese people are very friendly people. They're very open and flexible.
団員達もとてもフレンドリーで、これって、台湾の人達みなさんそうですよね。オープンで、柔軟性もあります。
And they have a very high standard. And they have the expection, expectation. They want to improve, they want to do better than they are now, and this is something I like.
そして演奏レベルがとても高い。更には、意識も高いですね。向上心が会って、今よりもっと上手くなりたい、これが私が気に入っているところです。
There is an ambition in an ensemble and they are really trying very hard to improve and do always the very best, extremely good discipline in the orchestra.
合奏をしていると、「こうしてやろう」という強い思いがそこにあります。団員たちは本当に、大変な努力をして演奏の向上に努めていますし、常に全力投球、自分達に対する厳しさと誇りは、このオーケストラは大変良好なものです。
And we have a very enthusiastic audience here in Taiwan. So this audience is also special.
また、台湾の聴衆の皆様が、とても熱心に演奏を聴いてくださいます。ここの聴衆の皆様は、特別な存在でもあるのです。
When I go to Europe, United States, they often ... they're quite old.
ヨーロッパでも、アメリカでも、オーケストラの聴衆というのは、年齢層がとても高いことがあります。
EB
Yes
エマ・ベナック
そうですよね。
JM
And here it's really mixed, many, many young people, middle aged, and older people. So that's um... I can feel that classical music here in Taiwan means a lot to people. So you can reach many people.
準・メルクル
ここ台湾では、年齢層が本当に多様で、若い方達も大勢いらっしゃいますし、中堅層やご年配の方達も、ですから、その…ここ台湾では、クラシック音楽というのは、皆様にとって大変な意味を持っているんだな、と思います。ですから、多くの人々に、私達の音楽が届くのです。
EB
Yeah, I mean, you are describing how you've worked with orchestras around the world. What are some of the challenges that come with that, you know, working in different countries, with people from different countries who have different impressions of music?
エマ・ベナック
そうですよね、その、世界中のオーケストラの指揮をされていて、どんな事が大変だったか、つまり、色々と異なる国々で、異なる出身国の人々と、それも音楽に対して様々な思いや印象を持っている人々の、これまで指揮をされているわけですが。
JM
Uh, for me the great thing about this is that I work with many different mentalities and background. So I know exactly what I ... what result I need.
準・メルクル
そうですね、私にとっては、そういう事の素晴らしさというのはですね、実に多くの心の有り様を持っている人々、実に多くの人生の背景を持っている人々と、一緒に仕事ができるということなんです。となると、しっかりと、自分がどんな結果を出さなければならないか、ということを自覚している、ということになります。
But the way to get to the result is quite often different, so working in United States or in Japan or in Taiwan or in France is completely different.
ただ、その結果を出すための方法は、色々異なることが、とにかく多いですよね。アメリカや日本、あるいは台湾やフランス、どこも全くその方法は異なるわけです。
And still you want to get this result. And that keeps your mind very flexible, and open also for what kind of people are this.
その中で、同じこの結果を出したい、その気持があるおかげで、気持ちが実に柔軟な態度になりますし、相手がどんな人々なのか、ということに対しては、オープンな姿勢になります。
I'm very interested in ... “Who are these people? How do they think? How do they feel? What do they think is important? And how do they get to certain results?”
私はいつも強い関心を持っていることがあって、「この人達は何者か？どんな考え方を持っているのか？どんな感受性をもっているのか？大切に思っていることは何か？結果にたどり着くための手段はどんなものか？」
And so I'm happy to change. And that's a kind of flexibility you have to have.
ですから、私は自分自身が変化してゆく、自分自身を変化させることがとても幸せに思えるんです。そしてこれこそが、持つべき柔軟性、というやつです。
EB
Yeah, I'm sure you have to learn a lot, kind of, as you encounter these challenges.
エマ・ベナック
ですよね。そうなると、多くのことを学ばないといけませんし、ある意味、そのための困難にもぶつかってゆくことになりますものね。
JM
Yes.
準・メルクル
そのとおりです。
