At Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul.
I love going to museums and art galleries, because when I’m here, I don’t think about anything. I can concentrate on artwork. And I think this place is wonderful. It’s one of my favourite museums in the world.
I think all kinds of art are connected. For example, when I see Baroque paintings, I can understand why Bach or Handel composed this kind of music.
These days, there are no typical ways to paint or make art. Also there are no boundaries. I think it gives more freedom to artists and to people, and it is more progressive.
I was born in Seoul, and I started playing the piano at the age of six, as a hobby. In Korea it is a very normal thing to learn an instrument when you’re a kid.
So I went to the piano academy for six months, and there was a teacher there. She told my mother that she thought I was a little bit talented.
I really loved playing the piano, and from the beginning I really wanted to be a professional musician.
I entered the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2011, when I was 17 years old. And from that experience, I kind of felt that I needed to move to Europe to experience more different cultures.
Berlin and Seoul, they are very different, but they have many similarities. Of course the culture is totally different, but when I’m in Berlin, it feels like home.
My interpretation has been changing. When I perform the same piece, it feels like a totally different music after five or ten years. So the music is an art of timing, I guess.
Time for me is very subjective. There is a tempo marking: “Andante” means like walking tempo. But a 20-year-old walking tempo and an 80-year-old walking tempo are totally different.
That’s why learning music is an endless journey.
