Bandura: The traditional Ukrainian instrument that's also a symbol of resistance

This is my beautiful bandura. It is a Ukrainian national instrument. This particular instrument is made from one piece of wood.
これは私が使っているバンドゥーラです。綺麗でしょう。ウクライナの民族楽器です。民族特有のこの楽器ですが、一木造り（一本の木材から削り出す工法）なのです。
As you can see, it's quite big, quite big and also quite heavy. I don't have to go to the gym after that.
ご覧の通り、かなり大きいですね。大きいですし、とても重いのです。今日この収録が終わった後、ジムになんか行く必要がないくらいですよ。
It's a plucked instrument. So, we have 65 strings, sometimes more at tune by semitones.
これは撥弦楽器（弦を弾いて音を出す）です。弦の数は65本、半音が加わって数が多くなる場合もあります。
With my left hand I'm playing bass strings, which tuned chromatically, and a treble strains as well.
左手は低音部の弦を、こちらは半音階でチューニングします。この部分はト音記号の音域のフレーズも弾きます。
You can pluck one string. You can pluck double string or you can have a cord.
弦の弾き方は、1本だけ、それから2本いっぺんに、更には和声も鳴らすことができます。
The other interesting feature is “Glissando,” which (is) means sliding. “Glissando,” it's Italian word. You can have that beautiful sound. If you put your fingers a little bit lower, close to this bridge, it can be sound like Sitar.
もう1つ、グリッサンドといって、高い音から低い音、あるいはその逆方向へ、音を滑らせるように鳴らしてゆくものです。イタリア語が起源ですね。とても美しいサウンドが得られます。指を楽器の少し下の方に添えて、ブリッジの近くですね、すると、インドのシタールのような音がします。
Or ... It can be scary.
そう…指が切れちゃいかも、ちょっと怖いかも知れませんね。

The history of this instrument going back to 6th or 7th centuries, used to be smaller, and usually blind musician
“Kobzars” play on bandura.
この楽器の歴史は6世紀、7世紀にさかのぼります。その頃は現在よりももう少し大きさが小さくて、通常「コブザール」と呼ばれる、目の不自由な演奏家が、このバンドゥーラに乗せて演奏していました。
They went through villages to villages and they sang about good moral, family, religious song as well. They took lots of important information, the most important to keep the identity.
村落から村落を回って、人としての良い生き方や、家族のこと、宗教的な歌なんかも歌って言いました。人に伝えるべき、大変大切な内容を歌に込めていて、それを自らのアイデンティティにしていたのです。
Specifically with this instrument, we carry on national values of Ukrainian. That's why this instrument, for so many years, was prosecuted by a Russian Empire, later on by KGB.
私達はこの楽器には、特別な思いで、ウクライナ人としての民族の価値観を覚えます。それ故に、長い年月に亘って、古くは帝政ロシア、その後ソ連のKGBの弾圧を受けてきたのです。
People was killed. Instrument was destroyed. People was taken to prison just for making this instrument, and also for singing Ukrainian songs.
人々は命を奪われ、楽器は破壊され、楽器を作ったというだけで、そしてウクライナの歌を歌ったというだけで、投獄されてゆきました。
I learned the history and I learn about the history of this instrument through those rare people who “magically” survived from Russian regime.
私が、その歴史を学び、楽器の歩んできた歴史を学んだのは、ロシアの支配から「奇跡的に」命をつないできた、貴重な存在の人々からなのです
When I heard that Russia brutally invaded my homeland country, Ukraine, I was shocked.
この度、ロシアが私の祖国ウクライナを、武力侵攻したことを知り、衝撃を受けました。
First half year I didn't play and practice, but after a while I understand this can be my weapon. On my conscious decision that I will be doing performances to rise the awareness of people in Australia, and around the world
最初の半年間は、演奏も練習も手に付きませんでした。でもしばらくして、判ったのです。この楽器こそ、私の取るべき武器になるのだと。決めた覚悟は、これからも人前での演奏を続けることで、オーストラリアの人々に、そして世界中の人々に、私達のことを意識してほしいということです。
This war is the result of the long history of Russian invading Ukraine, trying to possess the country, and suppressing Ukrainian culture.
この度の戦争は、ロシアがウクライナへの侵攻を続け、国を我が物としようとし、ウクライナの文化を弾圧しようとする歴史がもたらした結果なのです。
The old traditional way of playing on bandura survive. Ukrainian people, they can get through all the difficulties. Music helps the soul. That's why it will survive. It helps us to be stronger, to get stronger, and it's a symbol of Ukrainian nation.
バンドゥーラの昔からの伝統的な奏法は、今も息づいています。ウクライナの人々は、どんな困難も乗り越えてみせます。音楽は人とその魂を救うのです。だからこそ、この楽器はこれからも生き延びてゆくのです。この楽器は、私達が強くあり続けること、強くなることを助けてくれます。ウクライナの、祖国のシンボルなのです。
