My next guest can do more with four strings than most others could do with 40. Ukulele virtuoso, trust me, you have never heard anything like this.

It's an honor to be here.

JB 

So I got total truth, if I start with the truth, I told a friend of mine, “You got to watch tonight. There's the greatest ukulele player on the planet going to be on the show!”  

ジム・ブロディ 

さて、今日は本当のことしか話しませんのでね。まずはこれから。友人の一人に言ったんですよ「今夜は番組見てよ。地球で一番のユークレレ奏者が、番組に出演するんだからな！」 

And “Ukulele? Really?” And I said, “Listen!” I sent him a link and the guy is like out of his mind. I assume for non ukulele converts. You encounter that a decent amount, do you not? And so, ukulele, right? 

そうしたら「ユークレレ？本当に？」て言うものですから、こう言ったんです「まあ、聴けよ！」彼にリンクを送ったら、呆気にとられた様子でしたけどね。さて私には、ユークレレを夢中に弾いている知り合いというのは居ないのですが、あなたは、沢山いますよね。それで、「ユークレレ」ですよね？ 

JS 

Definitely! Because growing up in Hawaii, it's a very respected instrument because it's a big part of the culture. But once I started leaving the islands, I realized that people knew very little about this 

instrument. I mean, most people would,would... all they knew of the ukulele was Tiny Tim...  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

勿論です。僕はハワイで生まれ育って、ハワイでは、文化の中でもとても大きな存在ですので、大切にされています。ただ、島を出た時に気づいたのですが、この楽器は、殆ど知られていないんですよね。大抵皆さんおっしゃるのが、これだけ、ていうのが「Tiny Tim…」 

JB 

“Tiptoe Through the Tulips” Before you were born, I think. 

ジム・ブロディ 

「Tiny Through the Tulips」ですね、あれはあなたが生まれる前のものでしょう？ 

JS 

Yes, yes. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そうです、そうです。 

JB 

Is that right? 

ジム・ブロディ 

ですよね？ 

JS 

That's all right, yeah. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そのとおりです、はい。

I saw him married on the Johnny Carson Show. 

ジム・ブロディ 

私なんかジョニー・カーソンの番組の中で結婚式を挙げたのを、見たくらいですからね。 

JS 

Oh, yeah? 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そうなんですね？ 

JB 

So, is so... I'm also pronouncing wrong, correct? It's “ukulele.” Is it how it should be pronounced?  

ジム・ブロディ 

ところで、楽器の名前ですが、私の発音おかしいですかね？「ユークレレ」ですか？発音の仕方はこれで良かったでしょうか？ 

JS 

Yeah, “ukulele”  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

ええと、「ウクレレ」ですね。 

JB 

You're too polite to tell me the thing. I read you were four years old, a little kid, and your mother gives you this ukulele. Is that how this whole thing started?  

ジム・ブロディ 

あなたは優しいから、ごめんなさいね。さて資料によりますと、あなたは4歳の時、まだ子供の頃ですね、お母様からウクレレをもらったそうですが、これが楽器を始めたキッカケですか？ 

JS 

Well, she played from... when she was a teenager, so she was my first, my first ukulele teacher. And she would play for me all the time and I remember always asking her “Oh, I know I want to learn to play it!” But it wasn't until I was four that she sat me down, put it in my lap and taught me my first chord. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

ええと、母が楽器を弾いていたのは、10代の頃からですね。僕に最初にウクレレを教えてくれたのは、母です。母はいつも僕のために弾いてくれて、いつも「弾き方教えて！」とせがんでいたのを憶えています。4歳の時に初めて、僕を座らせて、膝の上に楽器を置いてくれて、それで僕にとっての人生初のコードを教えてくれたんです。 

JB 

And what was the point at which you said to yourself, “I can actually make a living doing this. I can actually do this around the world,” like you do? When did that come?  

ジム・ブロディ 

それと「これで食っていこう、これで世界で活躍しよう」今のあなたみたいにですね、そう思ったのはどの時点ですか？いつのことでしたか？ 

JS 

Oh, it was much later. I mean, all through high school and even my first few years at a small little college. I had no idea that I was going to do music, you know, full-time. I mean, it was just...  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そうですね、それはうんと後のことですね。高校時代もずっと、カレッジの最初の数年も、小さい学校でしたけれど、音楽を、フルタイムでやっていこうなんて、全然思わなかったですね。これは単に… 

JB 

What did you want to be? What did you want to do? 

ジム・ブロディ 

将来の希望は何だったんですか？何をしたかったんですか？ 

JS 

I thought I was going to be a school teacher.  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

学校の先生になろうと思っていたんですよ。 

JB 

Is that really true?  

ジム・ブロディ 

本当ですか？ 

JS 

As I love working with kids and I just didn't think that I would make it as a chronical. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

僕は子供と色々演るのが大好きで、音楽をずっとやって、辛い思いをする気はなかったですね。 

JB 

And you just play ukulele on the side.  

ジム・ブロディ 

ということは、余暇で楽しみでウクレレを弾いていただけ、ですか。 

JS 

Yeah. So it was always my passion, but there weren't a lot of solo ukulele players who didn't sing that could make a career for themselves.  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そうです。演奏活動に対する強い思いはありいましたけれど、歌わないで楽器だけでソロ活動が出来ているミュージシャンていうのが、それほど沢山いませんでしたからね。 

JB 

Are there songs you could say that sound far better in the ukulele than they do on a guitar for example? 

ジム・ブロディ 

例えば、ギターで弾くよりもウクレレのほうがいい、なんていう曲は、もしあれば教えて下さい。 

JS 

Well, traditional Hawaiian music, well certain traditional Hawaiian songs, you know. It just fits with this instrument and it's the sound that I grew up with. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そうですね、ハワイの伝統音楽は、ハワイに昔から伝わる歌なんかが、そうですね。この楽器にピッタリですし、僕もそのサウンドで育ってきましたからね。 

JB 

Is there about to be a ukulele boom? I mean, they're... I hear from time to time huge artists saying, “I love the instrument. I'm going to start.” Is that happening? Is that aberrational? 

ジム・ブロディ 

ウクレレブームなんて言うものは、来ると思いますか？というのはですね、時々かなり有名なアーティスト達が「この楽器すごく良いわ、この楽器習い始めよう」というのを、聞いたことがあります。そうですよね？それとも、気まぐれで言っているんですかね？ 

JS 

Oh, no, no. You're... you're right on. It's, I mean, it started kind of with George Harrison, you know. He was a big advocate of this instrument. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

いえいえ、おっしゃるとおりですよ。ジョージ・ハリスンから始まって、彼はこの楽器を贔屓にしてくれている一人ですよね。 

JB 

I heard that, yeah. 

ジム・ブロディ 

私もそう聞いています。 

JS 

And then now you have people like Train, you know, you have people like Eddie Vedder, then Paul McCartney, they're all playing ukuleles in their concert. 

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

今は、ロックバンドの「トレイン」とか、エディ・ヴェダー、ポール・マッカトニー、皆さんコンサートでウクレレを弾いていますよね。 

JB 

Speaking of George Harrison, one of the greatest songs ever written was “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” and you're gonna play that little piece of it for us? 

ジム・ブロディ 

先程ジョージ・ハリスンの名前が出ましたけれど、彼の代表作の一つが「While My Guitar Gently Weeps」今日は、この後これを弾いていただくことになっています。 

JS 

Oh yeah. This is the song that started it all for me.  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

ええ、この曲は、僕がここまでこれたキッカケをくれた曲です。 

JB 

And right, but on YouTube virtually nobody had heard of you. Maybe outside Japan in Hawaii and all of a sudden it went crazy. And here you are.  

ジム・ブロディ 

それと、Youtubeですね、最初はあなたは無名で、日本とハワイ以外で、一気に有名になりました。まさにあなががここまで来た、その曲です。 

JS 

Yeah. I was very lucky.  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

そうです、僕は本当にツイていたと思います。 

JB

Oh, gosh! There's so many, honestly I'm such a huge fan of music. I love all styles of music.

But if you have to pick one, if you said, “That's the man or woman I really want to be on the stage.”  

ジム・ブロディ 

もし一人挙げるとしたら「この人と、是非ステージに立ちたい」というのは？ 

JS 

One right now? Man, oh gosh! Edgar Meyer.  

ジェイク・シマブクロ 

今言うんですか？そうですね、困ったな、そうだ、エドガー・メイヤー。 

JB 

That's a good one.
