A great coincidence made her a member of the Concertgebouworkest. Meet viola player Santa Vižine!
素晴らしい偶然の出会いから、コンセルトヘボウの一員となった、我らがビオラ奏者、サンタ・ヴィジェナです！

Santa Vizine is not only a great viola player, but also a great colleague. She has a fantastic sense of humor and a worldly knowledge that gives her a very special and unique position within the orchestra.

最初は誰も知り合いがいなかったんじゃないですか。

Yeah. There's no one else from the Baltic states or Scandinavia.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
本当ですよ。バルト3国出身者も、北欧3国出身者もいませんでしたからね。

And we toured that area of the world.

あの辺りは、楽団のツアーで回りましたよね。

We did. Yes, we did.

We went to Riga.
ドミニク・セルディス
首都のリガにも行きました。

We did go to Riga. It was one of my favorite nights ever.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ

And had you ever played in that hall before?
ドミニク・セルディス
あの会場になったホールは、舞台に立ったことはあるんですか？

Yeah, I've played pretty much in every hall in Latvia that there is.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
ありますね。ラトビア国内のホールは、大概どこも舞台に立ったことはありますね。

Right. And that comes, I guess, from having gone to a special school. And this is special. Why? Is it for musician?
ドミニク・セルディス
でしょうね。まあそれもこれも、貴方が通った音楽学校は、特別な学校だということですが、音楽家の養成学校ですか？
SV
It's a school only for musicians, from the age of 5 until 18.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
音楽専科の学校です。5歳から18歳までの子達が通う学校です。

Wow! Did you like it?

I loved it. It was an absolute bootcamp, but it was wonderful.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ

But your professional working career started very soon after leaving that school.
ドミニク・セルディス
でも貴方は、学校を卒業するとすぐにプロとして活動を始めたんでしたよね。

Yes, in the same year I got into the Academy, and then at 19 I started studying with Kremerata Baltica Chamber Orchestra, which is the orchestra of Gidon Kremer.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
そうです。学校卒業と同時に、アカデミーに入って、そして19歳の時にクレメラータ・バルティカという室内オーケストラで研鑽を積みました。ここはギドン・クレーメルの作った楽団です。

This is basically a touring band, right?
ドミニク・セルディス
そこは確か、ツアーを活動の中心にしていましたよね。

It's a pretty much about 25 string players from the Baltic states, and, let's say, the tour starts in Tokyo, then everybody is flown over to Tokyo, and we rehearse there for a couple of days and then we kick off the tour. And ... that can be a week, it can be six weeks, it can be six months.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
25人ほどの弦楽器奏者が、バルト3国から集まっていて、例えばそうですね、ツアーが日本の東京からスタートするとしますと、まず東京に飛行機で移動して、そこで2,3日リハをやって、そしてツアーを開始する…1週間とか、6週間とか、6ヶ月とかね。

Six months!

6ヶ月ですか。
SV
That actually happened once.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
6ヶ月ていうのは、1回だけ本当にありましたよ。
DS
Six months on the road?
ドミニク・セルディス
6ヶ月間ツアーですか。
SV
Yeah, that was a very special one. That was the anniversary tour of the orchestra. The orchestra turned 20 years old. And Gidon himself turned 70. And we did have one very short break when some concerts were cancelled in May. And they fell in exactly at the same day when there was an audition here. So I flew in to Amsterdam. I won the audition. And after actually the third round I had an evening flight to Budapest to continue.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
そうです。あの時は特別で、楽団結成20周年で、それからギドン自身も、丁度70歳になったときだったんです。そのツアーの時、ちょっとだけ日程が空いたんです。5月の公演が、いくつかキャンセルになってしまって、その日程と、コンセルトヘボウのオーディションが重なったんですよ。ですから私はアムステルダムまで飛行機できて、オーディションに通って、最終の3次選考を終えた日の夜にブダペストに飛行機で移動して、ツアーにまた戻ったんです。

Yeah. That was a great coincidence.

本当に、凄い日程の一致でした。

Wow! Well, lucky us. And so ... Gidon Kremer has been more than just an employer.
ドミニク・セルディス
本当に、私達にとっても幸運でした。さて、ギドン・クレーメルですが、彼は単に、貴方の雇い主、それ以上の存在だったんじゃないですか。

Oh, absolutely. He's an absolute mentor. And almost he becomes like a father on tour because for nine years when you tour with someone who is a living legend. You really get to know the person, who they are, behind the whole fame.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
まったくです。本当に、彼は私にとってメンターです。それと、父親同然の存在でもあります。9年間ツアーで一緒で、なにしろ、レジェンド的な存在の人が、実際に一緒にいるんですから。お互い知り合って、人となりに触れて、彼が名声とするその理由、全てを肌で感じていました。

Right. And he shows his kindness in other ways.

でしょうね。そして色々なところで、優しさを発揮してくれています。

He does. He actually found this instrument for me. He noticed that I was playing on a very ... not so great instrument. And ...

How not so great was the instrument?

It was incredibly not so great.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
とんでもなく、あまり大したことがない、てことよ。

But that instrument took you through. I mean, you did the Academy, here in the Concertgebouw on that viola. You were touring around the world with that viola.
ドミニク・セルディス
まあでも、その楽器のおかげで、貴方はアカデミーに入って、ここアムステルダム・コンセルトヘボウにビオラ奏者としてやってきて、そのビオラと一緒に、世界中を回ることになったわけですね。
SV
Yeah. I'm surprised myself.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
そうです。自分でもびっくりですよ。

But it says quite a lot about you, I think so, Santa. You don't have to be playing a Stradivarius in order to have an amazing career.
ドミニク・セルディス
ビオラについては、貴方に関する話が沢山あって、ねえ、サンタ。ビオラ奏者として一流の仕事をしていこうと思っても、ストラディバリウスみたいな希少で高価な楽器は必要ないですよね。

No, that I have never believed that.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
そうですね、そんな必要はない、と認識しています。

But it became obvious, of course, to Gidon Kremer that you needed a new instrument. He found this instrument for you. Absolutely amazing. But you're settled here in Amsterdam. In fact, you live just down the road here. And Amsterdam is not known for its space and you're a mad gardening fan. So you've built a green house on your roof.

ただ、ギドン・クレーメルが、貴方には新しい楽器を充てがわないと、と考えたのは間違いないようですね。貴方のためにこの楽器を探してきてくれたのと事です。本当に素晴らしい。でも今は、ここアムステルダム、この場所から道路1本真っすぐ行った処に住んでいます。アムステルダムと言えば、あまり住むのには広い街ではありません。しかも貴方は、ガーデニングが大好きときている。屋上に温室まで作ってますよね。

Yeah. Well ...

町の条例は大丈夫なんですか？
SV
Yeah. We actually checked. We don't need a permit or anything. It's a small two by two by two.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
それはちゃんと確認しました。許可も何もいらないとのことです。小さな温室で、それぞれ2鉢ずつ育てています。

I'm absolutely in love with it. It made me sane during the initial lockdown.

ガーデニングは大好きなんです。最初のロックダウンの時は、あれのおかげで気持ちを落ち着けることが出来ました。

And food is more that just a hobby for you. This is a proper passion. And creating food, of course.

あと、料理も貴方の趣味ですよね。これはよくある、大好きなことというやつです。自分でも作ったりするとのことです。

Yeah. The relationship with my sourdough is longer than the one with my boyfriend. I mean, cooked two giant loafs yesterday.
サンタ・ヴィジェナ
そうです。サワードウと私との関係は、彼とのより長いのよ。昨日は超でかいのを2ローフも焼いちゃいましたよ。
