We, who have studied with Liszt, met together every second day at Hofgärtnerei . Sometimes there were only a few of us, and he could be very strict, even severe in his remarks.
私達、リストの弟子は、ワイマールのホフガルトネライの先生の自宅で、2日に1回のペースでレッスンを受けていました。時には出席する人数が少なくて、そんな時、先生は大変厳しく、言葉も、キツくなったものでした。
The mere mechanical attainments of pianoforte technique meant very little to him. Speech, pure and simple, of which so much is made by many pianists of the present day, he held in contempt.
先生は、ピアノのテクニックについては、単に機械的な身につけ方をしても、ほとんど相手にして下さいません。音色や奏法は、濁りも傷もなく、シンプルなものを、今日のピアノ奏者の多くが、そうしています。しかし、先生はこれを、良しとしてはおられませんでした。
As a composer, Liszt still remains a controversial figure. He has enthusiastic advocates, and equally energetic detractors. I played all the principal pieces of my repertoire in these lessons in Weimar, and followed Liszt to Rome, again to London in April 1886.

The last concerts he ever attended were a concert given by (Bernhard) Stavenhagen, and the recital given by myself at St. James Hall in London.

Liszt never charged a fee from any of his pupils. And we all looked upon him with a feeling akin to adoration. List was the good Samaritan of his day on generation.
リストは、弟子の誰からも、レッスン料をとりませんでした。私達は先生に対して、愛慕の念にも似た気持ちをもって接していました。先生は、当時を代表する、困っている人に親切にする人です。
Let us today do honor to Franz Liszt that wonderful personality but fiery spirit and truly a great man. Let me assure my hero that I am profoundly grateful to providence to have been one of his last pupils.
