I mean, it's so incredible to witness your journey from such a young age. I mean, five years old being on Ellen (DeGeneres show). Tell us a little bit about that, and where you are now.
ジェズラン・モィエット
まだこんなにお若いのに、本当に素晴らしご活躍ぶりを、拝見しています。5歳で「エレンの部屋」にご出演されています。そのことを、まずはちょっと教えて下さい。それと、現在のこともね。
EB
Yeah. So, I was in the show six times when I was younger.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、あの番組には、6回呼んでいただいています。もっと小さかった頃ですけどね。

Yeah.... I just was on it again on June, so, seven times. And that just started catapulting into the rest of everything. I met Quincy when I was, like around eight.

Yeah. And he... He's been a huge mentor and influence in my life since then. And I toured around the world with him with my jazz trio, released an album with him and ...

I mean, how old were you right there?
ジェズラン・モィエット

EB
I think five.
エミリー・ベアー
5歳だと思います。

Five years old! And what point did you, or your family recognize that you were a prodigy?
ジェズラン・モィエット
5歳ですか！どの時点で、ご家族は、あなたの才能に気づいたのですか？
EB
Uh ... it actually wasn't my parents. It was my grandma. She was watching me and my siblings when my parents were away out of town.
エミリー・ベアー
えっと、実際には両親ではなくて、祖母なんですね。両親が街に出ているときとかに、祖母が私達兄弟姉妹を看てくれていたんです。
And my brother played piano. He is four years older than me. And I would used to just go up and start messing around on the piano as I was like a baby, apparently.
4歳上の兄がピアノを弾いていて、まあ、私は近寄って邪魔したりするわけですよ、ピアノの周りでね、まだ私も赤ちゃんみたいなものでしたから。
And my grandma freaked out and started calling like music schools. And it's like, “What's wrong with this child?”
それで、祖母が驚いて、音楽学校とかに連絡するんですよ、「この子は、問題ない子ですから、よろしく」とか言って。

Lady GAGA! She was “Born This Way,” seriously!

Incredible! So, what was that like growing up, sort of, dedicating all your time and energy to learning and developing this skill, you know, piano playing?
ロバート・マック
スゴいじゃないですか！それで、どんな感じなんですかね、小さい頃からずっと、ある意味、時間も体力も全部、この才能のため、というか、ピアノの演奏につぎ込むっていうのか？
EB
I mean, my parents have always been really good at, like, keeping a nice balance between, you know, Emily as a kid and Emily as a music career.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、両親は本当に上手に、ですね、私のバランスを取ってくれましたね。普通の子供としての私と、音楽のキャリアを行く私と、とね。
But I mean, when you dedicate something ... you dedicate your life to something like this, that there's always gonna be sacrifices, like ...
でも、さっき「つぎ込む」とおっしゃいましたけど、人生何かに懸ける、ていうのは、普通、犠牲になることもあるかなって、例えば…
There's a lot of things that I couldn't do because I was busy ... Aaafh! I cannot speak! It's too early ...preparing for something ... I couldn't go football game or whatever. But I mean it's all worth it for me, like it's ... I'm not doing anything that I didn't want to, like ... Music is a huge part of my life.
忙しくって出来なかったことも…あらら、噛んじゃった！朝早いから、口回ってないですねフットボールの試合を見に行けないとか、ありましたよ。でも自分がしていることは、全部自分のためになっているので、やりたくないことは、何一つやってませんし、つまり…音楽は、私の人生では、とても大きな部分を占めるものなんです。
JM
Where are you at now? And looking back on those sacrifices maybe you made as a kid, as a child, is there anything that you've done to make up for it?
ジェズラン・モィエット
今はどんなことをなさっているんですか？それと、「犠牲に」とおっしゃいましたけど、小さい頃、子供の頃できなかったことで、その埋め合わせになった、ていうのは、何ですか？
EB
Oh, yeah. I mean, all these incredible opportunities and experiences that I've been a part of over the past ten plus years. I mean I wouldn't trade it for the world.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、私にはこの10年と少しの間、本当に素晴らしい機会や経験をさせていただいています。これは何物にも代えられないですよ。
JM
Football game, Quincy Jones. I would choose Quincy anytime.
ジェズラン・モィエット

EB
Yeah. But no, I always had a really nice balance like career and friends. I went to summer camp every year. I went to have like a regular high school, and so I had, like, the football games and homecoming, and that whole thing.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、でも実際は、私、仕事と、それから普段の友達との事とのバランスは、本当にうまく取れていたと思います。毎年サマーキャンプに行きましたし、みんなと同じハイスクールにも通って、そこでフットボールの試合とか、学園祭とか、全部参加しましたよ。
And just ... I don't know, it was good.
ですから、わかりませんけど、良かったと思っています。
RM
What was the hardest part of your journey? Has there been anything that's been sort of like just overwhelming? Is it the anxiety? Is it the expectations to perform? And ... I mean, what would you say is the hardest part of it?
ロバート・マック
今までで一番辛かったことは何ですか？押しつぶされそうになったこととか、不安になったこととか、周りの期待の重圧とか、その…一番辛かったこと、と言えば、どうなると思いますか？
EB
I mean I think it changes year to year.
エミリー・ベアー
それは、毎年違います。
Like, this year that the things that I'm struggling with are completely different than the things that I was struggling with like three years ago.
例えば、今年大変だな、て思っていることは、3年前とは全く違うことです。
So it can be anything from ... having really a hard show to prepare for, or just, you know, stress of deadlines and not being sure if I can make it done in time.
ですからどんなことでも…本当に大変な公演の準備だとか、締切のことだとか、タイムリミットまでにちゃんとやり切れるかなとか、ストレスはあります。
But, you know, part of job. I always like when I get super stressed about music I think to myself I was like, yeah, this kind of sucks.
でも、ですね、これも仕事のうちです。いつだって、音楽のことで大きなストレスを感じている時は、何ていうか、こういう嫌なことは、つきものでしょ。
But in any field that I want to be successful in, there's gonna be those sleepless nights, there's gonna be those tears, it's gonna be hard.
でも、どんなことでも上手くやりたい、て思ったら、夜寝られないとか、泣いてばっかりとか、辛くなるのは、お決まりですよね。
And I'd rather have those hardships doing something that I really love doing.
だからこそ、自分が本当に心からやりたい、て思うことのためだったら、そんな辛いことでも、経験してやろう、て思っています。
JM
When you are in that hard place what do you do to, kind of, get back into your creative flow?
ジェズラン・モィエット
そういう辛い状況に置かれてしまったら、クリエイティブな流れに自分を戻すために、どんなことをなさるんですか？
EB
Honestly? Well, a lot of times when I'm writing, it's to film and to pitch and it doesn't usually stem from like my creative stories.
エミリー・ベアー
心底戻すには、ですか？そうですね、曲を書いたり、撮影とか、プレゼンをしている時は、別に自分がクリエイティブな状態から、外れることはありません。
And so if I get like a writer's block or anything, then I just kind of go back to ground zero and start playing.
それに、作家がスランプに陥るような状態に、自分がなったら、その時はゼロの状態に戻って、また音を出し始める、それだけです。
JM
So that's kind of your process when you're working on Nancy Drew. I mean, you scored an incredibly fun film.
ジェズラン・モィエット
今のは、「少女探偵ナンシー・ドリュー」のことですね。あの映画音楽は、あなたが本当に素晴らしい曲をつけましたものね。
EB
Uh ... Yeah. I mean, ... that actually... both of those songs, kind of, just came out of pretty easily. It's different for everything, like there is this other thing that I was writing for Disney.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、でも実はあの映画の音楽は、結構スイスイ出来ちゃったんですよね。状況によって色々違うんですけど、例えば、ディズニーのために書いたのとかですね。
And some reason I just couldn't get it right, and I tried it like four times and it was like this big orchestral thing. And you know, it was just killing me, but then I think you just have to trust the process and you'll get there.
それで、何かしら理由があって、上手く行かないとか、4回ぐらいやり直して、それで、オーケストラ用の大作ができあがったりとか、とにかく、死ぬ思いですよ。でも、思うんですけれど、とにかくプロセスは信じてやってくことかなと、それで、目標にたどり着く、と思うんです。
RM
Is it? So it's trust. That's what helps you, sort of, go into the zone where you are most creative.
ロバート・マック
なるほど。「信じてやっていく」、それがある意味、あなたが創造性を最高に発揮する、そんな域に達するようになる、てことなんですね。
EB
Yeah.
エミリー・ベアー
そのとおりです。
RM
Anything else that's been helpful? Is it people or do you find certain spaces or places or ...
ロバート・マック
他に、あなたを救ってくれているもの、てありますか？人でも、場所とか空間とか…
EB
I mean, I have a really great team around me. So ... My films agent Richard Craft, and his team have been amazing and guiding me because I'm being put into so many situations for the first time.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、私は本当に素晴らしいチームに恵まれていて、映画の方は、演出家のリチャード・クラフトさんと、彼のチームが本当に素晴らしくて、ずっと指導してくれました。私も初めてのことがたくさんあったので、そんな状況にあったものですから、良かったと思っています。
This year was different studio and different people. So I think just having that great support network has been amazing.
今年は、スタジオも、ご一緒させていただいている人達も、全く違います。今回のサポートのネットワークも、ここまで本当に素晴らしですよ。
RM
Anybody you haven't met that maybe you want to work with?
ロバート・マック
まだ一緒に仕事をしたことのない人で、一緒にやってみたい人っていますか？
EB
Oh, my god! The list is too long!
エミリー・ベアー
ええ、それは困りましたね、きりが無いですよ
RM
Really?
ロバート・マック
そうですか！
EB
It is too long. Annie's Pack. Annie's Pack. I would love to write with them. This guy, Tom Misch. He's incredible. Any score film that I love Alexandre Desplat, John Barry, like, I mean, just the list is so long, and the list expands many different genres.
エミリー・ベアー
沢山いますね。Annies Pack一緒に曲を作ってみたいです。それとトム・ミッシュ。彼は本当にスゴいです。映画音楽が、とにかくなんでも好きなのが、アレクサンドル・デスプラとか、ジョン・バリーとか、数もジャンルも、とにかくきりが無いですよ。
JM
Let's talk about the single “Emotions.” What inspired it? What do you love most about it?
ジェズラン・モィエット
シングル曲の「エモーションズ」についてですが、作曲のキッカケと、ご自身一番気に入っているところは、なんですか？
EB
So, I started seeing a couple of years ago, kind of by accident. I started song-writing, and they had me demo of the song. So when I played different people, you're like, “Oh! she's singing.” And I'm like “It's me!”
エミリー・ベアー
2,3年前から始めたんですけど、それも偶然だったんですが、曲を書いて、依頼してくださったところが、私にデモで歌うようにおっしゃったんです。それで、色々な人が「あの子、歌を歌うんだ」、すると私も「これ、私が歌ってるんだ！」みたいな。
And then when I started writing more I started singing more and I started liking singing a lot more. And now I can't really imagine like without it.
それからですね、作曲も増えて、歌う機会も増えて、歌うのが好きになる気持ちが以前より大きくなって、今は、歌わない、ていうのが考えられないですね。
And .. So “Emotion” was one of the first songs that I wrote that sort of I feel like perfectly combined like my jazz background and like the pop stuff. Like it has a bossa nova beat. Like it's ... it just sounds like ... I don't know. It really uses that piano and the jazz piano for my background.
ですから「エモーションズ」は、ある意味、自分がジャズで学んだことや、ポップ・ミュージックの要素も組み合わせた感じで、作った最初の曲です。ボサ・ノヴァのビート感もありますし、他にも…どうですかね、実際、ピアノで培ったものや、ジャズピアノで培ったものも、取り入りれています。
But when it like goes to the pop drop, it's like “Whoa! this is different!”
でも、ポップス、ぽくというか「あ、これは今までにない」みたいな。
JM
It's a serious vibe.
ジェズラン・モィエット
シリアスな雰囲気ですものね。
EB
Oh, yeah. It reminds me of summer. I don't know.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、私は夏をイメージするんですが、わかりませんけど。
JM
What really inspired that, though, for you?
ジェズラン・モィエット
実際の所、何にインスピレーションを受けたんですか？
EB
A boy, you know.
エミリー・ベアー
ある男の子です。
RM
Oh, it's a boy!
ロバート・マック
男の子ですか！
JM
Oh, like all great song!
ジェズラン・モィエット
名曲は何でもそうですよね！
EB
Yeah. There was this guy who, like ... I had this crash on him. But he knew exactly how he made me feel, and, like ... he knew exactly how he was playing it. And it drove me crazy.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、その男の子は、何ていうか…私、本当に好きになってしまって。でも彼は、私にそう思わせる方法を、完璧に理解してくれていて、それと、自分が何を演奏しているか、完璧に理解していて、とにかく私、彼にはやられた、て感じです。
JM
Oh, well, I ...

I happen to serve I, kind of like, the idea that, you know, you experience a little bit of the drama, but then you create these great songs. So I wouldn't want to compromise that ability.
ロバート・マック
たまたま、何ていうか、あなたがドラマみたいな経験をして、それでこんな素晴らしい楽曲を作る、ていうなら、遠慮なく色々注文つけて、良い曲にしてもらいたいな。
EB

So what's next for you?
ジェズラン・モィエット
それで、今後はどんなことを？
EB
Uh, I want to start working on my next project, because this EP's out and I'm already like ... ready to start to work again something else.
エミリー・ベアー
そうですね、次の企画にも取り掛かりたいと思っています。というのも、EPのこれも終わって、次のことに取り組み始める準備は、できていますから。
But I'm also writing a lot for TV and film. So that takes up a big chunk of my time.
でも今は、テレビや映画の曲も書いているので、結構時間はたくさん取られます。
RM
Is it true for you because a lot of artists say “My favorite project is always THE NEXT ONE?” Is that your thing?
ロバート・マック
アーティストの方達の多くが、「自分の好きなのは、常に『次の企画』だ」なんて、いいますけれど、あなたもそうですか？
EB
It's usually the most recent one. I, for some reason, I think it's an artist thing, I really don't like listening to my own music because I hear everything that I need to fix, and, like, all the little things that bother me that no one else can hear.
エミリー・ベアー
普通は、直近の、というのが私の考えです。理由があって、音楽をやる人間としては、あまり自分自身の演奏、て聴きたくないんですよね。直さなきゃいけない、ていうのが、全部耳に入ってくるし、他の人にはわからないかもしれないようなことも、自分には、どんな細かいことも、でてきてしまいますからね。
But it's just like in my head. But right after I write something I listen to it like forty times. And, like, I love it, and then I get sick of it.
でも、頭の中で、何か書いたあとで、音にしたのを、それこそ40回でも50回でも聴いて、納得して気に入ったら、もういいや、て感じです。
RM
Uh, yeah, of course. It makes me sure it's perfect as far as you can turn to then release it, and then forget about it. Awesome.

そりゃそうですよね。わかります。しっかり吟味して、それで出せれば、万全ですし、それが出来た後は、もうすっかり忘れる。全然いいんじゃないでしょうかね。

「どうして『レ・ベア』なんて名前なの？」みたいたこと、よく訊かれんですよ。それで、何ていうか「そんな名前にしたつもりはなかったんですけど」、みたいに答えているんです。でも、これで大体いけます。M・L・Eで、どのプラットフォームも。
