NY Phil Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi performs the long-delayed US Premiere of Chick Corea’s Trombone Concerto — the jazz master’s final completed work before his death in 2021. Here, Joe shares some of the story behind the piece and insights into its creation.
ニューヨーク・フィルハーモニックの主席トロンボーン奏者ジョセフ・アレッシの独奏による、チック・コリア作曲「トロンボーン協奏曲」、今回がアメリカ初演となります。長らく本邦（アメリカ）初演が待たれていたこの曲は、ジャズの名匠による最後の作品で、2021年に無くなる前に生まれました。本動画では、ソリストのジョーが、本作品にまつわるお話と、曲の内容について語ります。

He invited me down to Clearwater, Florida, where he lives. He played together. We talked about melodies. We talked about the structure of the piece and we actually had the same idea for the beginning of the piece, which is to have the trombone start alone.

Once that's over with, we go into the first movement, which is called “A Stroll.” Chick was trying to depict his time in New York where he would walk from northern part of Manhattan all the way to downtown Manhattan.

There's a lot of movement where the piece moves fast and moves slow, almost without any warning. And at the same time it's almost like the trombone is leading us right behind him, and taking us to different places.

I've always been interested in how jazz and classical music integrate together. I wouldn't call this piece, you know, “A Heavy Jazz Piece,” but it has some incredible Latin influences. And the writing of Chick Corea you can hear very clearly the intervals are unusual.

Now you have to be careful what you wish for because he wrote some really high notes for me, sort of at the limit of my range and it ends with these four F, high F#s. And so that's sort of kind of getting into the trumpet register.
