Well, you know, it's interesting people say, “You know, Gabe, we understand that you hit the beach of Normandy on D-day,” which I did with the 116th regiment, 29th division.
「君はノルマンディー上陸作戦の、当日現場に居たんだってね」と、他の仲間から言われるのは、興味深いことです。その通りです。私の所属は、第29師団第116連隊でした。
That was one day out of 201.
201日間ヨーロッパ戦線にいた、ある日のことです。
And there were so many other battles that I remember so clearly.
他にも鮮明に記憶している戦闘は、沢山ありますよ。
They made me a machine-gunner, 30 caliber light machine-gunner.
私の任務は機関銃手、30口径軽機関銃手でした。
You know, the life expectancy of a 30 caliber light machine-gunner is three days. I'm still here.
この任に就いて、戦場に出たら、3日と生きていられない、と言われていました。もっとも私は、今こうして生きていますけどね。
There were three of us fromland machine-gunner squad that were hit by the mortar. Both of them were killed. And I just had a concussion. So that was the saddest day in my life.
私達は上陸分隊所属の軽機関銃手でしたが、私を含め3人が迫撃砲の攻撃を受けたのです。2人が亡くなり、私は脳震盪で済みました。人生後にも先にも、あんなに悲しい思いをしたことはありません。
The 29th division was going to come back early because they were overseas long before I was. ... So ... now our company guide out on 175th regiment company, I have been through battles. So when the division came back, he called me to the office and said, “Sergeant, we want you to have ... since you are the only survivor.” That's probably my most treasured possesion.
第29師団は他よりも早く帰国する予定でした。というのも、私達は他よりも長く国外で展開していたからです。それで…私達は175連隊と一緒に、その後の戦闘に加わっています。第29師団が帰国した際、司令部から呼び出しがありました。「ゲイブリエル軍曹、君にこれを進呈しよう。何しろ君は、唯一の生き残りだからね。」私にとって、おそらく最高の勲章です。
