Pianist Eliane Elias makes music that's a sophisticated mix of her Brazilian roots, classical training and mainstream jazz.

She's recorded 20 albums: the latest, a tribute to Bill Evans. She spoke with Patrick Cole about the performing life.

Bossa Nova, the way I view it, is a combination of Samba and bebop, like a Brazilian beat, with a little bit of the jazz grooving there.

... so has this groove, you know. So you swing, of course. It can be a little fast, a little slower, but it's a great groove.
というようなグルーヴ感だと思います。勿論、揺れるようなノリの良い感じですよね。今歌ったよりも、速めだったり遅めだったり、いずれにしても、本当に素晴らしいグルーヴ感です。
And ... So it's something that had such an appeal that internationally, jazz musicians, vocalists, became so interested in doing this.
ですから、なにかこう、国境を越えた魅力があると言いますか、ジャズミュージシャン達、歌手の人達みんな、ボサノヴァの演奏には、とても興味をもってくれます。

What was it like trying to break into this male-dominated world of jazz?
パトリック・コール
男性主導のジャズの世界に飛び込んでいったというのは、どういう心境でしたか？
EE
When I look back, it was really ... it looked like destiny. It really had to happen because I would go to clubs and go to places and introduce myself as a pianist, and of course at first the reaction was, “Oh, a jazz pianist,” you know, “a blonde woman from Brazil.”
振り返ってみれば、本当にその…なんだか、もうしょうがないかな、と言う感じでしたね。こうならざるを得ないというか、だって、クラブを回っても、演奏させてもらえそうな場所を回っても、自分はピアノ奏者だと言っても、当然最初の反応は「ああ、ジャズのピアノ奏者か」とか「ブラジルの金髪のオネェチャンか」とかですよ。
But ... as soon as I had the chance to play and going to jam sessions or start opening, and the words are spreading around about what I was doing with music.
でも…演奏させてもらえるチャンスをものにして、ジャムセッションに顔を出したり、あるいは前座をさせてもらったり、そのうち、私の音楽が噂で広まっていきました。

Your new release, “Something For You,” a tribute to Bill Evans, what was it about Bill Evans's music that you found striking?
パトリック・コール
あなたの最新リリース「Something For You」ですが、ビル・エヴァンスへのトリビュートアルバムになっています。ビル・エヴァンスの音楽について、あなたが特に印象的だと、やってみて思ったのは、どんな点ですか？
EE
I ... first remember falling in love with Bill Evan's playing when I was about 10 years old ... 10 or 11 years old.
私は…一番最初に、ビル・エヴァンスの演奏が大好きだなと思ったのを、憶えているのは、10歳の頃、11歳だったかしら。
And I was really taken by his approach to harmony, his way, his sonority, the way he played, in all the sound that he produced. He also approached the trio in a different way.
ハーモニーに対するアプローチ、和声の持って行き方、音の響かせ方、ピアノの弾き方、彼から出てくる音全てに、すっかりハマってしまったんですね。トリオアンサンブルと言うものに対するアプローチの仕方も、他とは違っていました。
Much more, I would say, with a lot more inner play where the function of the instruments ... let's say, the bass was much more conversational with piano - than the drums too.
言ってみれば、うんと、心を込めた演奏というか、各楽器の果たす役割が…例えばベースは、ピアノとよりも、ドラムとやり取りを密にとっていたりします。

Your husband, Mark Johnson, is your bass player, and he was the last bass player in Bill Evans' band before he died in 1980. So how did he help you interpret some of these songs that you recorded?
パトリック・コール
ご主人のマーク・ジョンソンさんは、あなたのバンドのベース奏者であり。ビル・エヴァンスのトリオで、彼が亡くなる前に最後にベース奏者を務めた方でもあります。今回の収録曲の中で、ご主人が力になった部分というのは、どのようなところですか？
EE
Well, you know, one of the very important things happened was that ... Mark first brought to me a cassette tape, and this cassette was given to him by Bill Evans about one week prior to Bill Evans death.
そうですね、今回のアルバム制作の過程で、一番大事なことの一つとなったことですが、マークがカセットテープを１本持ってきてくれたんです。これはビル・エヴァンスが彼にくれたもので、亡くなる１週間前のものです。
And it contained some material that Bill intended to record and perform, and about a year ago, he brought that to my attention.
ビル・エヴァンスが１年前に、収録して演奏しようとしようとしていた素材が入っていたんですね。これは興味をそそられました。
And when I started hearing he really put me, you know, to hear what Bill was knowing and the new compositions that he was working on. That was the start of wanting to do this tribute.
耳に入り始めた途端に、ですね、当時彼が取り組んでいた新作数曲について、何を構想していたかが分かったんです。それが、このトリビュートアルバムを作りたいと思ったきっかけでした。

What's next for you?

EE
I'm ... currently, actually working on a new recording which is a whole Bossa Nova recording, featuring lots of vocals.
今のところは…新しいレコーディングで、全曲ボサノヴァ、ボーカルを沢山フューチャーする予定です。
And this recording is going to be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Bossa Nova, which is this year in March, actually.
それとこのレコーディングはボサノヴァ生誕50周年、今年の3月なんですけどね実際は、これを記念するものです。

What do you hope to do that you haven't done yet?
パトリック・コール
今後おやりになりたいことは、何ですか？
EE
I'll be fortunate to be able to record and perform so many things that I wanted to do.
今までやりたいと思っていたことが沢山ありますので、それが全部できるようになる、そういう運のめぐりあわせがあるといいな、と思っています。
I mean, I love doing instrumental recordings. I love doing the Brazilian recordings with vocals, enjoy doing work with orchestras as well with big band.
つまり、ピアノを弾いてのレコーディングだったり、ブラジル音楽をボーカル付きでレコーディングしたり、オーケストラやビッグバンドとの共演もやってみたいですね。
And it's basically wanting to continue doing ... and have what I'm doing ... and in having the opportunity of bringing me whatever I've been feeling with music.
音楽を通して感じる、そう思わせてくれる機会を与えてくれるものを、ずっと続けていきたい、それが私のベースにあるのです。
