At the Kennedy Center celebration called “Let Freedom Swing: A Celebration of America,” held in Washington, D. C. on the eve of Barak Obama's inauguration as forty-fourth president of the United States, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and Wynton Marsalis had a conversation about jazz and the Constitution that was inspired by Moving to Higher Ground. The following is an excerpt.
第44代アメリカ合衆国大統領となるバラク・オバマ氏が臨む大統領就任式の前夜、ワシントンDCで開催されたケネディセンターでの祝賀行事「Let Freedom Swing: A Celebration on America 自由をスウィングさせよう：アメリカ祝祭の日」に際し、最高裁判事を歴任したサンドラ・デイ・オコナ―氏とウィントン・マルサリス氏との対談が開かれました。ジャズ、そして合衆国憲法についての話題は、本書「ハイヤーグラウンド：上を向いていこう」にインスピレーションを受けてのものです。以下、その抜粋を御覧ください。
One of the beautiful things about jazz improvisation is that you can take something that we all know and you can make it into another piece that still keeps its identity. It's like how the Constitution can be amended. It's still the same Constitution, but here's our take on it. That means it is always new because the ideals are valid, they're timeless.
ジャズのインプロバイゼーションの素晴らしいところの一つはですね、誰もが知っているモチーフを使って、それを全く別のものに作り変えてしまう、でもそのキャラクターは残しておく、そんなことが出来ることなんです。これって、合衆国憲法にも通じますよね。適用に柔軟性を持たせて、法律は維持しつつ、そこに解釈の余地がある。つまり、人間は理想を持つことを認められていて、それはずっとかわらないものなわけですから、憲法は常に新しさを保っているわけです。

I like the way, in the book, you related what happens in a good jazz band with what happens in a good democracy.

あなたがこの本の中で、優秀なジャズバンドと優秀な民主主義の在り様を結びつけて書いた部分があるけれど、そこが良かったわ。
WM:
I think that that's what the Constitution is, a collection of virtuosos who got together and they grappled with problems.
それが合衆国憲法とはどういうものか、ということだと、僕は思うんですよ。優れたものが集まって、様々な問題を片付けてゆく、みたいなね。
SDOC:
The great contribution the framers of our Constitution made was developing the form of our government, three separate branches － the presidency, the legislative branch, and the judicial branch － giving each one some powers over the other two.

我が国の憲法を作った人々の、最大の貢献は何かといえば、今の政治体制「三権分立」を作ったことです。大統領、立法府、それから司法と、それぞれが他の二つに対して権限を発動できるのです。
WM:
And the worked through those problems by a delicate way of balancing individual rights, the rights of states, what is the central government's role － and in music we do that all the time. The drummer is like the president, the loudest instrument.
その三つとも、色々な問題を解決していく上で、微妙なバランスを取ってますよね。個人の権利、各州政府の権限、そして連邦政府の役割といったもののね。これは音楽でも同じことなんです。いつもそうですが、ドラム奏者は大統領みたいなものです。一番大きな音のする楽器を担当しますからね。
SDOC:
Is that the president, the drums?

大統領はドラムなの？
WM:
Yes, the drum is the president.
そうです。ドラムが大統領ですね。
SDOC:
Okay. What's the bass then? That's pretty loud too.

なるほど。じゃあベースは？これもかなり大きな音よね。
WM:
The judiciary.
裁判官ですね。
SDOC:
Oh, the judicial branch.
サンドラ・デイ・オコナ―
あら、そうなの！司法のね～。
WM:
There's a great bass player named Milt Hinton. He's called The Judge.
ミルト・ヒントンっていうベースの名人がいるんですが、彼は「ジャッジ」なんていわれてますよ。
SDOC:
He keeps them steady.
サンドラ・デイ・オコナ―
メンバーをシュッとさせるわけね？
WM:
He addresses the harmony and the rhythm. And he's in the center of the rhythm section, so he's in the central location where he can understand everything that's going on, has an influence on the ground rhythm and on the harmony. But the piano in the rhythm section would be like the legislative branch. The piano represents all of the notes, all of the keys.
ベースっていうのは、ハーモニーとリズムの両方を発信するんです。そしてリズムセクションの中心にいますので、バンド全体の動きを把握して、曲の基本リズムとハーモニーのカギを握っているわけです。それからピアノ、ピアノもリズムセクションの一人ですが、これは議会、つまり立法府みたいなものですかね。ピアノは曲に出てくる音符も音階も全てを担当します。
SDOC:
The piano can play everything. And you have to listen to each other. I mean that's the point. When one of you is playing a solo, the others play along, but they listen.

ピアノは何でも演奏できる、同時にお互い聴き合わないといけない。ここがポイントね。誰か一人がソロをやっている時は、他のメンバーも演奏しているけど、ちゃんと聴いてもいるのね。
WM:
One of the greatest lessons on the bandstand is that you're forced to listen to everybody else, so it teaches you to be open in your hearing.
バンドで演奏していると、大事なことを色々学びますけれど、その中の一つにですね、とにかく他のメンバーを聴くことは「絶対」。そうすることで心が開かれて、自ずと色んなことが耳に入ってくるようになる、っていうのがありますね。
SDOC:
Well now if we can just get members of the legislative branches to pay a little more attention to the theory of jazz music, we'll all be a little better off. Do you think?
サンドラ・デイ・オコナ―
なるほどね。だったら議員の先生方も、もうちょっとジャズのセオリーをお勉強なさったらいいわ。そうすれば私達の暮らしも、少しはマシになるかも。そう思いません？
WM:
I'm with you.
同感ですね。
SDOC:
I like this passage in the book where you say, “When a group of people working together feel something, when they trust that all are concerned for the common good, when they're determined to be in sync no matter what happens, that is swing.”

この本で、あなたがお書きになったこの部分が、とってもいいわ。「チーム一丸となって物事に取り組む集団が、心に何かしらの思いを抱く時、そしてメンバー全員が公平・公正であると互いを信じる時、何があっても調和を保つと決意を固める時、これを人は「スウィング」と呼びます」。
WM:
Swing is a matter of equilibrium. The Constitution is a supreme example of swing. How can we figure out how to meet each other's objectives and be together and for it to feel good? Now, when we look at swing, it brings together opposites. So let's take the bass for example. When we amplify the softest instrument and also the lowest, the bass is forced to play on every beat with the cymbal, which as a part of the drum set is the loudest instrument and the highest-pitched. When they get along and they work it out, you have a great time. When they don't, you got a long night. The musicians are always saying, “We're doing our best when we play together, we're going to play this tune, we're going to come together, and we are together.”
スウィングっていうのは、バランス感覚なんですね。合衆国憲法はスウィングの極め付きの一つでしょう。お互いの目的をすり合わせて、それをまとめ上げて、気分良くそれを受け入れるには、どうすればいいか。スウィングっていうのは、お互い相反するものを一緒にまとめる行為なんですよ。そしたら、ベースを例にとってみましょう。ベースっていうのは、元々一番音量が小さくて音域が低い楽器です。これをアンプで音量を上げるわけですが、ベースが全ての拍で足並みをそろえなければいけないのが、シンバル、これはドラムセットの一部ですが、ベースとは真逆に、一番音量が大きくて音域が高い楽器です。この真逆の二つが仲良く仕事をしきれれば、それは素晴らしいことです。そうでないと、目も当てられません。ミュージシャンがいつも言っていることですが「一緒にやるからにはベストを尽くそう、この曲に取り組むからには、今も、これからも一緒にやっていこう」とね。
SDOC:
I think maybe our country in this recent election has come together in a way that holds some promise for the future.

この度の大統領選挙では、国民全体が未来に向けて何かしらの誓いを立てたかのように、一つにまとまったんじゃないでしょうかね。
WM:
We are invigorated －the whole world is uplifted by this decision.
今からワクワクしますよ。今回の結果で世界中が盛り上がっていますよ。
SDOC:
Well, we all wish this new government the very best, don't we? We want it to succeed.
サンドラ・デイ・オコナ―
そうですね。私達皆で、今度の新政権が最高のものになることを願いたいものですね。うまく行ってほしいと思います。
WM:
Yes. And we're going to help it to succeed.
そうです。そして皆でうまく行くよう、力を合わせていきましょう。
