In this week's “Broadway and Beyond,” one of Europe's most prestigious orchestras returned to Carnegie Hall for the first time since the pandemic began. Tonight is the final performance for the Vienna Philharmonic. One of the youngest musicians is a native New Yorker, who gave CBS2's Lisa Rozner, preview.

The 25 year old grew up in Manhattan's Murray Hill neighborhood, and while attending the Laguardia High School of music and performing arts, he enrolled in pre-college classes at the Juilliard School.

After earning his bachelor's and master's degrees from Juilliard, the dean recommended he apply to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Academy, where young musicians are trained through private lessons, chamber music, and working with the orchestra. The academy members travel with the ensemble all over the world. This is an outdoor performance in Vienna from 2020.

ジュリアード音楽院で学士過程と修士課程を終えた後、学部長から、ウィーン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団アカデミーへの応募を勧められます。このアカデミーは、若手の演奏家を個人レッスンや室内楽、それから実際にオーケストラの中に入って研鑽を積むものです。アカデミーのメンバーになると、楽団と一緒に世界中を回ります。こちらは2020年のウィーンでの野外コンサートの模様です。
Stratman was the only New Yorker accepted into the small program of about a dozen musicians and moved to Austria in September 2021.
ルーカス・ストラットマンさんは、現在10数名のアカデミーの中では、唯一のニューヨーク出身者です。2021年9月にオーストリアへと渡りました。

The lessons, they've been so inspiring. The Vienna Philharmonic is one of the best orchestras in the world, and it's been a privilege for me to be able to play with my colleagues.

Absolutely! I feel like combining what I've learned here in the States and at Juilliard and then hearing a new perspective on things. It's been like the perfect combination for me.

He always plays on this violin, created by Italian master violin maker Alberto Fernando Moglie in 1926, who was also a curator at the Smithsonian.

Carnegie Hall is always a special place to go from the point of view of acoustics but also the audience is very open and enthusiastic.

カーネギーホールというのは、いつ来ても特別な場所ですよね。それは音響という点もそうですが、お越しくださるお客様が、オープンで、熱心に聞いてくださいます。

The first concert we're playing, uh, all (Sergei) Rachmaninoff program, so we're playing the second piano concerto as well as the second symphony. And it's ... they're both such grand works, and I can't wait to see what it's going to sound like in Carnegie Hall.

初日の公演は…全曲（セルゲイ・）ラフマニノフで、なので、ピアノ協奏曲第2番や、交響曲第2番も演奏します。それで…2つとも大曲ですから、カーネギーホールでどんな音がするのか、今からとても楽しみで待ち遠しいですね。

And Stratmann has already won a coveted seat in the Vienna State Opera, an opportunity which he says is only possible because of the academy program. The orchestra will tour other cities in the US.
