Hi, my name is Marc, and I play percussion in The Cleveland Orchestra. I started playing percussion when I was in fifth grade in my school's band program.
こんにちは。僕の名前は、マークです。クリーヴランド管弦楽団で打楽器を担当しています。僕が打楽器を始めたのは第５学年（日本の小学校４年生）のときに、学校の課外活動で吹奏楽に参加したのが最初です。
My parents were both musicians, so I was around music a lot. My father was a band director, and when I was three and four years old, I used to go watch the football games and was fascinated by the drummers in the marching band at his school.
両親は音楽をやる人たちでしたので、身の回りにはいつも音楽があふれていました。父は吹奏楽の指導者で、僕が３歳とか４歳の頃は、いつもフットボールの試合を見に行って、そこで父が指導しているマーチングバンドのドラム奏者達を見て、カッコいいなと思っていました。
If you're thinking about playing percussion, there's a few things you should keep in mind.
打楽器をやろうかなと思っている皆さんには、是非、憶えておいてほしいことがあります。
You get to learn a variety of musical styles and you get to learn a variety of percussion instruments, which you can see keeps things very fresh and versatile.
まず、とにかく色々な種類の、音楽の演奏スタイルを学んで身につけること。次に、とにかく色々な種類の、打楽器のことを学んで身につけること。その姿勢があることで、物事が全てが、自分にとって、すごく新鮮で、すごく柔軟性や多芸多才さを持つようになることが、分かってきます。
When you're starting out, usually we start here on the snare drum, with time and rhythm. Then we move to the mallet instruments for melody and harmony.
打楽器を始めるときに、多くの場合最初は、スネアドラムから取り組みます。これによって、拍子やリズムを学びます。次に、マレットを使う楽器に取り組みます。これによって、メロディや和声を学ぶのです。
You'll use both hands to play percussion instruments. So it doesn't matter if you're right-handed or left-handed.
打楽器を演奏するには、両手を使いますから、右利きだとか左利きだとかは、関係ありません。
There's a wide variety of instruments in the percussion family. Let's take a look.

Some of the things I like the most about being a percussionist are that I get to travel and play for and meet new people. I also enjoy being a teacher of percussion and I got to follow my lifelong dream of being a percussionist.
打楽器奏者をやっていてよかったな、と思う事は、いつくかありますが、例えば、あちこちに出かけて行って、今まで出会ったことの無い人達に出会うことも、その一つです。それから僕は、打楽器を教えることもしています。これからも打楽器奏者としてやってゆきたいという、一生かけた夢を追い続けていこうと思っています。
