Kate Liu, laureate of the 3rd prize at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, is now in Warsaw for the Chopin and his Europe International Music Festival.
第17回フレデリック・ショパン国際ピアノコンクール第3位入賞者の、ケイト・リウさんです。今回はワルシャワで開催されます「ショパンと彼のヨーロッパ」国際音楽祭の舞台に立ちます。
♪♪♪What do you feel when you return to Warsaw?
ワルシャワへまたお越しになりました、感想をお願いします。
It's always a very familiar sort of feeling, very warm feeling, just because I've played here quite a few times, and it's where I, kind of, had my start. And ... so I always enjoy coming back.
ワルシャワへ戻ってくるというのは、いつも何というか、とても慣れ親しんだ気持ちを、温かい気持ちを感じます。それは何と言っても、ここで沢山演奏してきたことと、ある意味、ここが私の出発点だからです。ですから、ここに戻ってくるのは、いつも楽しみです。
♪♪♪Last year, a younger generation of laureates joined The Competition family. Do you feel pressure from the new generation of pianists?
昨年（2021年）はコンクール入賞者の顔ぶれが、今までよりも若い世代が入ってきました。彼ら新しい世代のピアノ奏者達に、プレッシャーは感じますか？
I don’t think I feel any pressure. It's just a different... I admire the new laureates a lot, and I follow their playing and it's just a different Competition, you know.
プレッシャーは全く感じません。単に異なるというか…今回新たに入賞者となった方達は、すごく尊敬していますし、演奏も見習うところがありますし、私と参加したコンクールが違う回だった、それだけのことです。
You meet young artists, really great young artists all the time. And I've met a whole bunch all my life. It's just good to hear them and to see them and hopefully to meet them.
若い音楽家の皆さん、本当に実力のある若い音楽家の皆さんは、常に出てきます。私もそういう方達とお会いする機会が、これまでずっとあります。演奏を聞いて、見て、できればお会いしてなんて、とにかく素晴らしいことです。
♪♪♪Do you think the audiences see you more as a laureate of the Chopin Competition or, rather, as a famous pianist?
あなたの演奏をお聴きになる方達は、あなたのことを、ショパン・コンクール入賞者として、あるいは、人気ピアノ奏者として、どちらだとお考えですか？
I guess that's up to them to decide. Of course, I'm really proud to be associated with the Chopin Competition and with Chopin in general.
それはお聴きになる方達のお考えでしょうね。勿論、ショパン・コンクール入賞者と見てくださることは、本当に誇りに思いますし、私と言えばショパン、そう見てくださることも、本当に誇りに思います。
But as the new competitions come and go and everything, you know, you never know about these things. But I still love playing Chopin and I love coming back. So for me it's still something I remember very deeply and fondly. Yeah.
でもコンクールは毎年新たに開催されますし、こういったことについては、そうですね、わからないものだと思います。ただ私は、今でもショパンの曲を演奏するのが大好きですし、ショパンの音楽にまた立ち返ることも大好きです。ですから私にとっては、コンクール入賞者であるということは、心に深く、そして嬉しく刻まれていることです。はい。
♪♪♪At The Chopin Competition you played Concerto in E minor, yet this year at The Festival you performed Concerto in F minor. Have you played it before?
あなたはコンクールではショパンのピアノ協奏曲第1番ホ短調を演奏なさいました。今回音楽祭では、第2番ヘ短調を演奏されました。これは以前弾いたことがあるのですか？
I haven't played it before, so this would be my first time. I think they're both really wonderful pieces. They're certainly different, but they both have the Chopin's sensibilities and beauty.

It's a pitty that not more people in the Competition actually played number 2. I think it's really such a beautiful piece. I really look forward to playing it and I've really enjoyed working on it.
コンクールでは2番を弾く人があまりいないのは、残念です。2番は本当に素晴らしい曲だと思います。これを演奏するのは本当に楽しみですし、この曲に取り組んできたのも、本当に楽しい道のりでした。
♪♪♪This year Poland celebrates The Year of Romanticism. What is romaniticism for you?
今年2022年は、ポーランド共和国下院が定めたポーランド・ロマン主義の年です。あなたにとってロマン主義とは何ですか？
Music straight from the heart, I think. Anything straight from the heart, that's romanticism. It's some of the most beautiful music that comes straight from the heart.
自分の心から真っ直ぐに発信される音楽、だと思います。音楽に限らず、自分の心から真っ直ぐに発信されるもの、これがロマン主義です。自分の心から真っ直ぐに発信される音楽、これってとても素晴らしい音楽の部類だと思います。
Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, even Rachmaninov or Schubert, they are composers that are really dear to me. Whenever I think about romaticism, I just think sort of an outpouring of emotion.
シューマン、ブラームス、ショパン、それとラフマニノフやシューベルトなんかも、私にとっては心から大切な作曲家ばかりです。ロマン主義とは何か、そう考えるといつも思うのは、とにかく心の移り変わりを全部注ぎ込むこと、これに尽きると思います。
And of course that's not to say that, you know, composers from the previous era like Bach or Mozart or Beethoven didn't have their romantic moments.
改めて言うことではありませんが、時代的にこの前の、バッハ、モーツァルト、ベートーヴェンといった作曲家には、ロマン主義の時代というものはなかったですよね。
And they definitely had that sort of emotional depth as well. Definitely in the romanic era it was a different kind of outspoken, outpouring, I would say.
といいつつ、こうした作曲家達も同じように、心の移り変わりを表現する深さが、しっかりあったわけです。当然、ロマン主義の時代になって、それまでとは違った心の吐露の仕方をするようになったわけです。
♪♪♪Being a pianist, an interpreter of music, do you consider yourself a romantic soul?
ピアノ奏者として、音楽を演奏する人間として、ご自分は、空想とか恋愛とかに深く思いを巡らすタイプだとお考えですか？
I definitely enjoy the romantic part of music, and my interpretations certainly tend towards the more romantic side. So yeah, yes.
そういう音楽の側面を、私はひたすら自分で楽しんで、そいういう演奏の側面を、私はひたすら自分の向かう先として進んでいる、間違いないですね。
