Either I was going to be a bass player or a furniture mover, but I think what really attracted me to the bass was chocolate because if chocolate could sing, it would sound like a double bass, and I am a chocoholic.
ダブルベースについては、自分で演奏する側になるにしろ、引越し業者みたいにえっちらおっちら運ぶにしろ、この楽器の魅力は、チョコレートみたいな音ですよね。何しろ、ダブルベースって、チョコレートみたいな、チョッと暗めで甘い音で歌ってくれますからね。それに私は、食べるチョコレートも、目がない人間なんですよ。
I tried to play the bass when I was five years old, but I was too small, so I waited until I was nine.
そのダブルベースを弾いてみようと思ったのが、5歳の頃でした。でも当時は体が小さすぎて、体が大きくなるのを待って、弾き始めたのは9歳になった時でした。
And there was a very strange thing that I only discovered many years ago that the day that I started studying the double bass was the day that my favorite bass player died, Serge Koussevitzky.
ここで物凄く数奇なことが、でもこれは、うんと後になって分かったことですが、私がダブルベースを練習し始めたその日に、私の大ファンのダブルベース奏者が亡くなっているんです。それがセルゲイ・クーセヴィツキ―です。
I'm the first one actually in history to make a living at just playing solos and doing nothing else. And I think that I drew so much attention to the instrument by performing a lot as a soloist that a lot of young people who would have never thought about playing solos on the double bass chose that instrument over the violin because there was so much potential.
ソロ活動だけで食っているダブルベース奏者というのは、実際の所私が最初の人間なんです。そして多分ですけれど、私に引っ張られてソロ活動をやっている奏者というのが、かなりいると思います。若い人達が、それまででしたら、ダブルベースでソロ活動なんて、考えもしなかったのに、楽器の潜在能力がすごいからと言って、バイオリンなんかよりも、ダブルベースを選ぶようになってくれたわけです。
When I played my debut, unknown to me, was the widow of Serge Koussevitzky in the audience, and I didn't meet her that night.
人前で本格的な舞台に立たせてもらった最初の時に、私は知らされていなかったのですが、セルゲイ・クーセヴィツキ―の奥様、当時はご主人は亡くなられていましたけれど、客席にいたようなんです。私はその日はお会いしませんでしたけれどね。
But the next day I had a telephone call from her, and she said … she had a very thick Russian accent and she said, “Hello, this is Mrs. Koussevitzky calling.” And I said to her because I thought this is a friend of mine playing a practical joke on me, I said, “Yeah, baby, I'll bet!” And then she said, “I would like you to come to my apartment. I have a gift for you.”
ただ次の日に奥様からお電話があったんです。それで電話口でですね…物凄いロシア語訛りでしたけれど「こんにちは！クーセヴィツキ―の家内ですけれど。」私は、どうせ友達の一人がふざけて掛けてきたんだろうと思い込んで、こう言ってしまったんです「おおよ、分かってらあ、おめぇよぉ！」そうしたら奥様がこうおっしゃるんです「私のアパートにいらして下さらない？贈り物をしたいの。」
And so I went to her apartment. And the first thing I saw was the very famous Amati double bass that Koussevitzky played all his life. And she said, “After having heard you last night, I feel that you are the one who should carry on the legacy of my husband, and so here is the Amati for you to play.”
それで行きましたよ、奥様のアパートにね。入るとすぐに目に入ったのが、有名メーカーのアマティ製のダブルベース。クーセヴィツキ―が生前ずっと弾いていたものです。奥様がこうおっしゃったんです「夕べあなたの演奏を聞いて、夫の遺したものを受け継ぐのに、あなたは相応しい一人だと、だからこのアマティを、弾いてもらおうと思いましたのよ。」
I usually keep my radio station tuned into classical music, and I hear a lot. But there's sometimes I don't want to listen to classical music. I'm tired, I need a lift and sometimes. It takes too much concentration. So I'll put on jazz or popular music, or sometimes even rock just to get a beat going so that I feel more awake. And then there are lots of times in the c when I really need to be jarred into existence, so I turn on the news and that always makes me very upset and very alive!
私は普段は、ラジオはクラシック音楽の番組をかけっぱなしにしています。沢山聴いていますよ。でも時にはクラシックなんか聞きたくないな、という時もあります。気分が冴えない、気分を上げていかないといけない、クラシック音楽って物凄く集中力が必要なんです。ですから、粋なビートがずっと続くジャズとか、ポップスとか、場合によってはロックとかをかけて、それで頭をすっきり気味にするわけです。それと結構よくやるのがですね、本当にパッと気合を入れようと思ったら、ニュース番組をつけて、こうすると頭に血が上って、相当元気になれますよ！
The message that I'd like to convey is the message that I'd like to see all students or all music … musicians convey to their audience: passion, love, devotion, joy, spirit, and a total infatuation with the instrument that I'm playing.
お伝えしたいメッセージですが、これは音楽を学ぶ学生達全部だったり、あるいはですね…お客さんに自分の演奏を聞かせるミュージシャン達にも、そうであってほしいと思っていますが、熱い気持ち、愛する気持ち、のめり込む思い、喜びの気持ち、自分の魂にあるもの、それと、演奏中の一瞬一瞬に自分が楽器に感じる思いを積み重ねたもの、これですね。
