Hi, my name is Avi Avital. The mandolin is probably one of the most underestimated instruments in the world. But I think it's wonderful. Let me show you why.

Avi Avital is one of the best mandolin players in the world. He fills concert halls such as the Pierre-Boulez-Saal in Berlin with a mandolin, which many consider an amateur instrument.
世界でも屈指のマンドリン奏者の一人、アヴィ・アヴィタル。マンドリンと言えば、プロの演奏家でない人達が演奏するものと思われる節がありますが、彼はこれを駆使して、ベルリンのピエール・ブーレーズ・ザールのような会場も満員にして見せます。

The mandolin is this little, wonderful, charming user-friendly instrument that evolved from other plucked string instruments in Europe in the 18th century.
このマンドリンという、大きさは小さめで、素晴らしさもあって、人を魅了するような、そして使い勝手の良い楽器ですが、弦をはじくタイプの色々な楽器の中から、ヨーロッパで18世紀に発展してきたものです。
It became very popular also throughout the 20th century
as a kind of after work instrument: the instrument you would play with friends after work or would take with you for a trip.
また、20世紀全般にわたって、多くの人々に愛好されるようになりました。ある意味、仕事が終わった後の娯楽と言いますか、仕事が終わった後友人達と弾いたり、出かける先に持って行ったりするものですね。

Avi Avital considers himself a mandolin ambassador, and has arranged a whole spectrum of pieces for the small plucked instrument. Originally the mandolin comes from Italy, and appeared in pieces by baroque composers Vivaldi and Scarlatti. Mandolins were used for court music, but also as a folk instrument. Mandolins come in different shapes and sizes.
マンドリンを世の中の人々に知ってもらうことを、自身の役目と考えたアヴィ・アヴィタル。この弦を指ではじく小さな楽器用に、膨大な数の作品を、あらゆる分野から取ってきてアレンジしてきています。マンドリン発祥の地はイタリアで、ヴィヴァルディやスカルラッティといったバロック音楽の作曲家の作品に登場します。マンドリンは宮廷音楽で使用されたものですが、同様に庶民の楽器でもありました。現在マンドリンといっても、様々な形や大きさのものがあります。

This is really something that is special for the mandolin because ... I don't know, no one gives an authorization. You can be free. “Oh, violins. Please make them always this shape.” The mandolin doesn't matter.
これは実にマンドリン特有のことで…分かりませんが、この楽器はこうでないといけない、そういうものが無いんです。そのあたり自由にやれるのです。「ああ、バイオリンか。これは必ずこの形状にしてください。」というものが、マンドリンには無縁の話なんです。
And still, until today, I think there is a tradition of not keeping any tradition as far as it comes to mandolin making, but it’s constantly evolving according to the makers, innovation, creativity or the instrumentalist, the players’ demands.
今日でも、マンドリンという楽器を作るに際しては、伝統というものを一切持たないようにする、そういう伝統があるのです。といっても、作り手達であるとか、その時々のイノベーションや創造性、あるいは弾き手、つまり演奏する人達の要請に応じて、絶え間なく発展しているのです。

And following this hit from the late 90s, the mandolin has found a home in pop and rock music too.

So this is the opening of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion”. This song came out when I was in primary school. I think like, overnight I became, “This cool kid,” that could play the R.E.M. song, instead of that other kid, that could play Vivaldi and Bach.

Avi Avital was born and raised in Be'er-Sheva in the south of Israel. Mandolins have enthralled him for as long as he can remember.

My neighbors from upstairs had a mandolin. And I remember seeing the mandolin was on the table on the sofa and just plucking on it with my fingers. And sound came out. And it is a very simple thing, but it was very magical to me.
家族で暮らしていた集合住宅の、上の階の住民が、マンドリンを持っていました。今でも憶えているのは、マンドリンがソファの近くのテーブルの上にあって、それを自分の指で弦をはじいていたことです。音が出て、すごく単純な話ですけれど、僕にはすごい魔法のような出来事だったのです。

In 2010 Avi Avital became the first mandolinist to be nominated for a Grammy Award, as ‘Best Instrumental Soloist Performance With Orchestra’. Adapting classical music is very important to him.
2010年、マンドリン奏者としては史上初の、グラミー賞「インストゥルメンタル・ソロイスト・パフォーマンス・ウィズ・オーケストラ」（管弦楽伴奏による協奏曲の演奏活動に対する表彰）にノミネートされたアヴィ・アヴィタル。クラシック音楽を自身の演奏に取り入れていくことは、彼にとって非常に重要なことです。

Even though I'm a mandolin player for that many years and do it professionally, I feel that it still holds secrets in it that I need to reveal. I feel it with every new piece that I play.
マンドリン奏者として長年やって来ていますし、プロとしても活動してきていますが、今でもわからなくて解明しなくてはいけないと思う事が色々とあります。今までにやったことの無い曲に取り組むたびに、そう思います。
Sometimes my first reaction is that “It is not playable on a mandolin!” And then I would sit with it for half an hour and figure out a way to play it.
「こんなの、マンドリンでは演奏不可能だ」と最初のリアクションがそうなることもあります。こうなると、30分でも腰を据えて、どうやって弾きこなすか考えだすのです。
And it's like, “OK, there's another way to play the mandolin.” So I have all these discoveries still with the instrument.
すると「よっしゃ、こんなマンドリンの弾き方もあるじゃないか」なって、そんな発見を色々と全部、この楽器でこなしているわけです。

After studying at the Jerusalem Academy of Music, Avi Avital traveled to Padua in Italy and studied historical mandolin repertoires at the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini. Since 2009, Avi Avital has lived in Berlin. The German capital city has become a second home for him.

Living in Italy as an artist was a formative experience because the celebration of beauty is such an inhale part of your daily life.

Now, if Italy is beautiful, Berlin is interesting. And it is just a different stimulation to my creativity and to the way I play or interpret.

The mixture of people and cultures that you encounter here, in the art and music world, but not only, is so enriching.

The simplest two chords are G major and C major. G major is, you put the first finger on the second fret of the second string and this finger (middle finger) on the first string on the third fret.
一番シンプルなコードは、GメジャーとCメジャーです。Gメジャーは、人差し指を第2弦の第2フレットに置いて、中指を第1弦の第3フレットに置きます。
One string up and you have the C major chord. (showing example) And that’s it!

I am on a mission to bring the mandolin, you know, in the front stage. I think partly because it suffered of a kind of a little bit of a bad reputation or bad connotation throughout the history of music.
マンドリンを音楽の世界の一番目立つところへ持ってくる、これは僕の使命だと思ってやっています。今までの音楽の歴史の中でずっと、評判が良くないとか、良くないイメージを連想させるとか、そういうことがあったのも、理由の一つでしょうね。
It's a sweet instrument, extremely capable, not ... in any way under any of the other instruments that I know.
この楽器は愛らしいものです。物凄く可能性がありますし…どの楽器にも負けない、僕はそう確信しています。
