<What does a harp remind people of? An instrument of angels? The essence of classical music? A magical melody?>

Frequently associated with angels, the harp is known for its enchanting and transformative powers. But in modern classical music, the harp is usually given an accompanying role.

But one Dutch artist with Korean background performs for sold out crowds around the world and releases quickly acclaimed albums as a solo harpist, proving that the harp has a rightful place on the global stage.

So, you have been to Korea many times before, but what brings you to Korea this time?
LM
This time, I wanted to come to see family and friends. But at the same time, my record company is based here as well.
SJA
Sony?
LM
Sony. So I can discuss with them about new plans for the future. So it's really great for me to be here as well as ... as an artist because Korea is a country that loves music, classical music, and it's always been so wonderful to be here.
SJA
Well, as a solo harpist, you have a unique role. Not very many solo harpists are out there. Your last album, was that Philip Glass' work? Was that your latest album?
LM
I released two Philip Glass albums.
<Lavinia Meijer: Glass Etude No. 17>
Glass Etude No. 17
And after that, I released also album that included more of my own compositions because it's actually through composers like Philip Glass that I started composing myself; something I never thought I'd ever do, but it gradually grew. And...
<Open Window - Part 2 by Lavinia Meijer>
Open Window Part 2
Yeah, it's really a different part of me that comes to life through my own compositions. I was able to release them as well.
SJA
Oh, that's wonderful. I mean, all these compositions are for the solo harp. Are they?
LM
A lot of them are. I have done also some collaborations with other musicians and composers.
For me, from a young age, I got like a personal mission to really promote the harp as a solo instrument. And it grew from the idea that ... I realized the harp was not very well-known as a solo instrument. And that's a bit weird to say because I think everybody knows that.
For me, I didn't grow up in a family with other musicians. There were some music at home, but to pick up a musical instrument was very new.
And then I had a girl friend at my elementary school that played the harp. When I saw and heard the instrument, I knew this is my voice, this is my way of communicating.
I used to be very shy. Through the harp I could communicate. And I also discovered that you can communicate in so many different ways, not only the happy, but also sad and even angry.
That's when I started performing more and because I won a couple of prizes that gave me the opportunities. And then I realized, “Oh, people don't really know the instrument as I do.” And programmers didn't dare to program the harp as a solo instrument.”
SJA
So as you said to me, it was not very well-known that the harp could be such a solo instrument, sort of, you know, being the heroine of the stage. But you also talked about winning some international competitions. It's not often that a harpist wins an international music competition, is it?
LM
Well, in the harp world, there are competitions.
SJA
The harp world! I love that! It's like angels, yeah!
LM
But at the same time the harp world is quite small. And so within there are quite a lot of competitions. But not always the winners, they move into a solo career. They often become chamber musicians or play in orchestras.
Also for me, feeling like the urge and the necessity to bring out the harp what I believe was the best way to bring it out as a solo instrument.
It was also a big challenge because you are actually trying to be on a stage that isn's there. So I had to convince programmers to promote to program me, and to give me a stage and really work on my convincing techniques as well.
SJA
So I'm curious about that. How do you convince people? Because they think about the harp, they think about angels strumming, you know. Or maybe as sort of in the background of an orchestra. But how do you argue that the harp should be in the center that it should be by itself? And there is a range of music that the harp can play?
LM
I think it's also very important for any artist to build a network, to meet people, and also to have mouth to mouth...
SJA
Yeah, “face to face!”
LM
Ah! Yes! So that's also what happeed with me. I have wonderful family, friends, and connections that worked to bring my name out. And then I had a specific TV moment on Dutch National TV where I was given one minute of performance, which was given to any artists in the programme. But in that one minute I showed four different styles; like classical but also jazz, pop and very ... like avant garde ...
SJA
In one minute! My goodness!
LM
In one minute! And that made big impact. And then people were talking about it years later.
<On the show “De Wereld Draat Door” 16 years ago (2008)>
And I think that was like the start of an awareness “Ah! This instrument, that we used to think it was mainly for chamber music and even for background or waterfall or super-romantic moment of movies.”
It can do more. And that's when I also tried to make my programs in a way that I could present what is known about but also what is unknown, and really tell and educate people about it.
SJA
I can tell that you love the harp a lot, but why do you love the harp so much?
LM
I think for me, the harp has really been my guide through life. Being a very shy child, when I discovered the harp at least it's something that I got back from the audience, they saw me transform into ... like a grown-up. So it really transformed me and opened myself up.
And I think the harp gave me an identity. To be accepted is a big word, but to have a place in the Netherlands, where I was of course very much aware that I was not “Dutch”! (indicating “how she looks”)
SJA
Well, we're obvious.
LM
And it was really a way for me to also feel comfortable growing up in the Netherlands and giving something to the Dutch audience.
And at the same time, it opened so many doors to meet wonderful people around the world. So that's really what's ... Yes, it has been so wonderful about my profession, every day.
SJA
So the harp allows you to really connect with the Netherlands, a country that embraced you and loved you throughout your life. But it also allowed you to connect to Korea. How did that happen?
LM
Yes. I grew up in a family with a lot of different cultures. My father is Dutch and my mother is Austrian. They first had a daughter themselves and then my biological brother and I came from Korea together. And then another brother from Ethiopia, from Africa.
And we were very open about being adopted. But at the same time, I wasn't open to find out more about my country of birth.
And then it happened that one day I received a letter from my biological father, who was searching...
SJA
... who was searching for you and your brother?
LA
Yes. So for me, that was a moment that I started opening up and starting to be curious.
And at the same time, I found out about the love for music in Korea. So I also made the connection. Maybe someday I can go there as a performer.
SJA
When you first got this letter and you knew that your biological father was searching for you, how did you feel?
LA
It was actually very strange because I always knew that I had parents in Korea, but it kind of felt like a fairy tale, something from very far away. I had my parents and in the Netherlands and the family, and that was just the way I knew things were.
And when he came in, it was suddenly as if he was standing next to me and was real. And it actually caused a bit of an identity crisis for a while.
SJA
I can imagine.
LA
I like “What is happening and why now? Who is he and what are the expectations?” So going back as a performer was also a very comforting way to come back because I had something to come back for.
SJA
And when did this happen? What age were you?
LM
This was when I was 24 or 25.
SJA
Was this around 2008?
LM
Yes... Well, yes, 2007 or 2008. So there was not so much time between the letter and me coming back. But when I came back, I was still very anxious to meet him. But then I performed here.
I remember a lady coming to me afterwards and saying, “Thank you for coming back after all these years to share your music with us.”
And that moment really broke my shield and I felt welcomed here and also being a Korean. I think that moment also changed my way how I look at my past.
And I met him, I met my biological father. And for me it definitely felt in ... like a gap in my life and at the same time it also rose new questions.
SJA
I'm sure.
LM
But I'm very happy and I made up the decision and it really enrich my life and coming back to Korea always feels like also coming home in a way.

Lavinia emphasized the importance of musical elements like phrasing. I was so happy because I felt like I was on the same wavelength as her. I hope to be a musician who can stir emotions, just like Lavinia!
********
SJA
Now that you've gained another home, another place you can call “home”, how did that influence your work as a musician?
LM
I think the moment that I came here and also met my biological father, it made me feel more grown up. It was also in a way the first big decision I ever made myself in life. And it pulls my like ... personal life up.
Well, I realized my musical life as pushing and pushing all my youth. I wanted to be the best. I did so many competitions. And I was pushing it up.
And I think music is about life, and if you have certain life experiences with a big impact, it will come back in music and it will make it deeper and richer. And that's what I also felt.
I cannot really pin it down like in details, but there was this feeling that it really synchronized with each other.
SJA
So that it maybe added some different dimension to Lavinia, who was just a Korean-adopt one, but a Korean-adoptee, solo harpist growing up in the Netherlands.
LM
Yes. And one specific song for me brought out my Korean identity when I hear it but also especially when I play it. And that's also what I heard from Dutch audience like, “Oh, we see your Korean side coming out!” and that's the song “Arirang.”
<at the Embassy of the Netherland in Seoul>
<Open Window (based on the theme “Arirang”) by Lavinia Meijer>
Open Window (「
LM
I think “Arirang” brings a lot of different emotions. One is definitely a feeling of longing and missing. Of course, the Netherlands and South Korea are far away, so it's a feeling of missing that when I come back to the Netherlands.
At the same time, I'm also happy in the Netherlands. So it's always a bit of mixed feelings. In the end, I'm really happy that I'm from two worlds.
<A Korean folk song that encapsulates Lavinia's identity and emotions.>
LM
I think “Arirang” is one of the most beautiful songs, but also knowing where it comes from and what a big impact it has on Koreans, we don't have a song in the Netherlands like “Arirang”, a song that connects and really says, “We are all the same and we are all together.” For me that's the power of music and like really core of it. Whenever I play it, it brings out that part of Korea I left behind.
SJA
And beyond “Arirang”, I hear that you also have now other Korean composers and artists that you admire and you are now learning from, you know, in many different ways. Tell us about your adventures into Korean music after that.
LM
Yes, well... I have very big help from a very good friend of mine, Adriana (van Straten), really helped me to meet more people in the music scene in Korea. I was very honored to meet Hwang ...
SJA
Hwang Byung-ki. I know it's not difficult (to pronounce). The late great Hwang Byung-ki.
LM
Yes, the wonderful Gayageum player who unfortunately passed away. When I heard the Gayageum there was something in me that said, “Hey, you might have heard this before”. Even though, I don't know if that really happened.
SJA
You left Korea when you were two years old.
LM
Yes, yes. So the chances were very small. At the same time it told me that this is like the Korean equivalent of the harp. I heard the harp in this instrument and it made me very jealous because the Gayageum can make these ornamentations and these trills that the harp cannot do.
But at the same time it's inspiring to find instruments with different sounds because my goal has always been to try to imitate as many different instruments in the harp.
And the Gayageum really for me makes this bridge as well between the Netherlands and Korea.
SJA
Have you maybe thought about learning to play the Gayageum?
LM
I actually did, yes. But very little. I made a theatre show in the Netherlands with a writer, but we are telling about our backgrounds. He's from Morocco and I'm from Korea. In that performance I also played the Gayageum. And my friends sent over a Gayageum and I found a teacher in the Netherlands. So I learned it, just the basics. But I was able to play “Arirang” on the Gayageum.
SJA
How do you feel when you actually play the Gayageum?
LM
I think there is a very big expression in the Gayageum which I'm trying to find also on the harp. Of course they are two different instruments but it's really nice to work with, like making them come together.
SJA
Collaboration maybe is in the works?
LM
That would be great. I'm very open for that.
SJA
I can see that there's a possibility of that happening especially as you're composing your own works; many more renditions ... harp renditions, Korean traditional music. We'll be excited to hear.
I see from your title of your albums “Voyage” (and) “Passage” that you're very much thinking about this journey that you are making in to the future.
LM
Right.
SJA
Maybe you're looking back now on the journey that we've done.
LM
Yes. And looking back at my own life I changed names as well.
SJA
LM
My Korean Name is Suji and it became Lavinia. For me that was an identity change. So how much is in a name? It can really shape things and maybe it can limit things.
But I think it's a very interesting balance.
SJA
Maybe it's another reason that your performance, for example, the composer Philip Glass' “Metamorphosis” is such ... it's a wonderful recording.
LM
Thank you so much.
SJA
So maybe that's how you sort of put your heart in this performance.
LM
Yes. And I think music is really a way to open up your mind and your spirit to see like what is out there and where are we going to.
SJA
Well, I'd be very very curious to see where you're going to.
LM
Thank you, 감사합니다!
SJA
And that's it for me. I'll be back next week with another GLOBALIST who's putting Korea on the map. Sohn Jie-ae, out!
