2021/2/1

Mitsuko Uchida | Franz Welser Most and her Cleveland Musical Family

The Cleveland Orchestra

The Cleveland Orchestra is my American, musical family, as an orchestra. And the public is an extension of that. The Cleveland orchestra public is basically a part of my family.

So I wanted to share when I was asked, would I do it, of course I jumped at it because it would be such a wonderful opportunity to be saying "Hello," to the Cleveland public and also to be sharing a program with Franz (Franz Welser-Möst) was a wonderful idea. And of course, if it is Franz, I wanted to play Schubert.

Franz is a very special, very difficult to catch type of musician and person actually, but he is ... so therefore, forever interesting. And it was pure pleasure doing some Bartók as well recently and there are some Mozarts that I did with Franz that was really a dream.

So there are loads of things that I will still explore and discover some more repertoire with him.

Mitsuko Uchida | Transporting Audiences through Great Music

The Cleveland Orchestra

Because there are challenges and music... whether there are challenges or not ... music is something that is so important for humanity.

And it is different from what words do. Where the words end, music starts. Music starts from silence, and from there music grows.

And the greatest music we have that is such treasure for us, and interestingly, it's a fact that apparently that when you let children listen to Mozart's music, their IQ goes up.

And there is something in the greatest of music that stirs in people, in people's hearts, in people's minds, and in people's soul.

But something that other things don't. There is some great art. There is what I do love to go and see, for example, The Resurrection of Christ in San Sepolcro by Piero della Francesca.

But I am not a Christian, I'm not religious at all. And yet, every now and then, once every three, four, five years, I want to stand in front of that painting to see what it means, what that means.

Because there in that painting, a man stands who has been dead. And that is such an experience. And in music, in every music there is something... in great music, there is something different.

And people can experience different emotions and make discoveries and you can be transported. And so therefore it is so important. And pandemic or not, it has to be continued. It has to be kept up.

Not to say, "Oh, there are easier things." Of course there are easier things, but what music brings, and what great literature also can bring; Shakespeare's plays, or some poems, a little poem of Paul (Éluard), or great paintings, those can bring some things to people that other everyday life may not.

2021/2/23

Mitsuko Uchida | On Her History with The Cleveland Orchestra

The Cleveland Orchestra

My relationship with Cleveland Orchestra actually  existed before anybody knew; that I loved The Cleveland Orchestra. Because I, as a student, I loved already (George) Szell recordings. And some of them with Leon Fleischer, the Brahms piano concerto, etc. And I also have heard some Mozart recordings and I thought this is something so stunning.

And I loved the... it was not the precision, which there was, but it was the transparency of the music that I never heard anywhere else. And I always loved and admired The Cleveland Orchestra.

And one day my friend, Tom Morris, was the executive director and then he, before even I was officially invited as a soloist, he asked me why don't I come and visit Cleveland and listen to this wonderful orchestra, which I certainly did immediately. And so it started.

When I first played with them, first there was a Blossom  concert with the Mozart concerto and then in the... in the Severence Hall there was a Schubert concerto.

But even with the Mozart concerto in the Blossom, some of the players came to me and said, ... well, actually it was... I don't know his name but it was the one from the first violin section with a long, long beard and he came up to me and tapped on my shoulder and said;

“You know darling, you know that we know, I know what you want. Why don't you get rid of the conductor and play Mozart concertos with us without?”

And I looked at him and said, “Oh! Are you sure? Are you serious?” He said, “Yes, I am serious and many of us I'm sure are thinking like that.” So it started and so slowly, slowly it developed and then one day I said, “OK, let's try.”

And we first did some chamber music together, and then we did the concert in the Severence and somehow, it was a hit and from that came the complete concerto series.

Because I loved the players, I still love the players. I love,  I know so many of the players personally, musically personally, as well as personally and I loved playing with them and I wanted to have something of that ... what we did together to remain somewhere and that's why I did it.

2021/3/02

Mistuko Uchida | On Schubert's Piano Sonata

The Cleveland Orchestra

Well, this D 840 (Piano Sonata No. 15 in C major, D 840 “Reliquie” ), I always loved. It starts from nowhere. It starts... it opens your world. And you think it is going to be rather lovely and strong and positive. And bang! ... there is a ... It is a non-modulation. It is in C major, which is very ... It is a strong open key.

And normally in the classical sort of diatonic music that is in the sonata form, the first, the statement is in that in the tonic so this is C major piece starts on C major and that continues strongly.

And we are going to ... And second subject is going to be in the tonic that's sort of... Now, the second subject is going to be in a dominant. So one expects it to go to G major, just about, all right? And this one, he twists them and on one moment he twists it. And we are in B minor and then D major. And that is such a place as you may ... you never dreamt of.

It is not in this world and he takes you there. It is completely frightening and what he thought about it, what he... how he meant it. And then the F sharp minor is so ... it is just earth shaking, and so on.

And then second movement comes back in C minor. And it... then when it ends, it disappears into nothing. And you expect a scherzo to start, which is never to come.

So it sort of makes me think as if it was the world where ...  when he was around the time of his life, in which he was... when he was composing this, because he knew he was quite soon to die.

And so for him, to be faced with this horrible notion of death, and yet having certain longings and certain beauty, this is so Schubert. And that he couldn't continue at all is

something so... for me, it is beautiful

2021/3/20

Mistuko Uchida | The Mozart Concerti

The Cleveland Orchestra

The Mozart piano concerti, I have always loved. It was so difficult to play. I thought I played so dreadfully badly that. Well… but that is something that I think about everything that I do, but anyway Mozart concerto is so difficult.

But one day in the early 80s at some point, I was asked by Englsih Chamber, who lost their pianist director, who canceled; that was actually Murray Perahia, that would I jump in. And I said, “I've never done it before. I play Mozart, some Mozart concerti, but I never play directed. So you must be joking.”

And they said, “No,” and I said, “Even if I'm dreadful what I want to do?” I said. (They said,) “Oh, we will follow you.” And so we started. And that was how I started for the first time play directing.

And in the 80s I did a lot in England in … between the English Chamber Orchestra and then Scottish Chamber Orchestra as well. And then we ended up recording them complete with Jeffrey Tate.

And so that is so ... it is a long history that I have with Mozart concerti. And the longer I play, I live with them, the more wonderful they become.

And I know how they... I mean for example, I used to think although beyond 466 D minor concerto, that is 1785 beyond, is other than the great ones, but 84 those concerti for from 449 to 459, these are Köchel numbers, those are extra ordinary.

And I love all of these different facets of the pieces. And those are… the concerti are pieces unlike the solo or violin sonatas. But he called ... Mozart called them piano sonatas with obligato violin.

And those are personal pieces; piano sonatas sort of pieces; rondeau A minor (K511), adagio B minor (K.540) those are very personal and private. And you want to be playing them actually quietly in your house but the concerti he wrote to be played to make a splash of a career and not that it is any better or worse, but it is to be shared with many people. So I enjoyed so far as all the type playing them
